Default detention for terrorism suspects up to 90 days without charge

Quote:
Voters back 90-day detention plan

Voters overwhelmingly back Government proposals to hold terrorism suspects for up to 90 days without charge, according to an opinion poll.

The YouGov poll for Sky News found almost three-in-four (72%) believed the maximum time police can detain suspects should be extended to 90 days.

Of those, 31% said that they would support an unconditional extension of the existing 14 day limit while 41% said that it should be granted only with the approval of a senior judge.

The poll found that 16% backed a proposal by rebel Labour MPs to extend the current limit to 28 days.

Earlier Downing Street conceded there would have to be some form of compromise deal as senior ministers admitted they would struggle to get the 90-day measure through the Commons in the face of widespread opposition among Labour MPs.

The concession is a bitter blow for Prime Minister Tony Blair who has consistently argued that the additional powers are essential if police are to combat effectively the threat of international terrorism.

The pressure on the Government intensified with a rare intervention by former prime minister Sir John Major, who denounced the plan to extend the existing 14 day limit for holding suspects to 90 days as "utterly and totally unacceptable".

Mr Blair will face his critics on the Labour backbenches when he addresses the Parliamentary Labour Party at Westminster, and faces the media at his monthly press conference.

YouGov questioned 2,014 adults between November 4 and 5.
ridiculous.. how can u detain someone for 3 months without charge? i say charge them with terrorism then detain them lar..

next thing u know the gov will detain ppl for that long period with no charge also...

It might be a problem if they misuse that power to arrest political opponents or rivals as "potential terrorists".

I think the reason why they want to hold people for so long without charging them is if they THINK someone is a terrorist but just can't prove it. So, 90 days gives them time to arrest that person and put long and hard pressure on him/her until he/she cracks.

If you think that's bad, maybe you should consider our own ISA.

Or worst yet... Scary!!!

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/...icle325439.ece

China executes about 10,000 people a year. Amnesty International says that in any three-month period, it kills more of its people than the rest of the world does over three years. The executed include those found guilty offences such as bribery, embezzlement and stealing petrol. Innocent people are frequently killed. Most executions take place after sentences are imposed at rallies in front of massive crowds.

10000/365=27 a day!

Or, one every hour or so.

Often enough the police don't have enough evidence to charge you. Granting 90 day detention orders gives them the power to arrest you with little evidence, and hopefully thwart a terrorist attack. Its not an ideal solution, but its the only way out.

If I'm not mistaken, the laws also provide a cluase for judges to order the release of anybody detained. That would cover potential misuse for political gain.

Australia has passed its own anti-terrorism laws which provide for detention of up to 14 days, with the approval of a judge.

In Malaysia, there is no such judicial oversight on merits grounds. And Malaysia's ISA detention is 2 years.

Yeah, that's insane. But maybe because of the super large population.

Maybe they are just looking for a way to trim the population a little?
