China mission to clear the air!

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid will be going to China to clear any misconception that Malaysian authorities have been targeting Chinese nationals, especially women, coming to Malaysia.

The order came from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who feels the trip is necessary in the wake of a spate of cases where Chinese women in police custody were subjected to humiliation and wrongful treatment.

“He telephoned me and personally instructed me to go and restore the confidence of the Chinese,” Azmi told a press conference at Parliament House yesterday.

In the latest case highlighted in the press, three Chinese women claimed that while under police detention their money was stolen, they were forced to strip, and were peeped at by male officers while bathing.

Following their public complaint, the police allegedly harassed them by going to their apartments at 2am purportedly to check whether they were with their husbands and living at the addresses provided.

Azmi said his visit to China was one of many steps Malaysia would be taking to set the picture right, and the urgency of his mission was evident as he had to postpone a trip to Pakistan and will also miss the Pengkalan Pasir by-election on Dec 6.

The minister said he would stress to the Chinese that the Malaysian Immigration Department had never practised profiling of their women nor presumed that they were here for improper purposes.

“We never did, and will never do so,” said Azmi.

He told newsmen that the Cabinet had in fact instructed him to ensure that the Immigration Department does all it can to help Chinese visitors.

“I have even set up an office at KLIA so that I will be there to ensure that things run smoothly,” he said.

Azmi said that it was the Immigration Department’s duty to stop foreign women (of all nationalities) from coming here for vice activities.

This is a typical Malaysian attitude. Instead of cracking down on the police force, they are only going to try placating the Chinese.

Do you think they would be satisfied with a promise by a POLITICIAN that things will be better? I think not.

I say let heads roll for these incidences. The government should really crack down on these errant police and instil some discipline in the force.

IMHO, talk about how poorly paid they are, are really just excuses. The government has a duty to ensure they are paid a fair salary. But if they think it's too little, QUIT and do something else. Don't join the force if you think you can't survive on the salary. A low salary is no excuse for corruption or abuse of power.
