Default AMD Launches Branding Blitz!

Quote:
Advanced Micro Devices on Wednesday unveiled a branding campaign designed to raise its profile in the consumer PC market, in a move that will likely help the chip maker compete with its larger rival, Intel.

AMD plans to slap the “AMD LIVE!” brand on desktops and laptops sporting its processors as part of an effort to distinguish itself from the numerous chips and electronics companies vying for consumer recognition in retail and online stores.

“AMD wants to change the way consumers experience digital entertainment in their home and on the go,” said Iain Morris, senior vice president of digital consumer media and pervasive computing at AMD. “Our vision for digital media is grounded in leveraging the strength and flexibility of the PC to empower consumers to enhance their entertainment experiences with personal, interactive applications, all without disrupting users’ TV viewing experience.”

The company’s announcement came a day after Intel formally launched a wholesale change to its corporate logo and branding campaign at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Intel is dropping the well-known (and now well-worn) “Intel Inside” logo, preferring to use the term “Core” for branding computers with different types of Intel processors. For example, a PC with a dual-core Pentium would have “Core Duo” stamped on it.

Intel’s digital home brand, “Viiv,” also will appear on computers and in marketing efforts for desktops and laptops built for handling multimedia tasks, such as streaming videos, downloading music, and managing photos around the home. Intel, based in Santa Clara, California, also will stop using the dropped “e” in its corporate logo and attach “Leap ahead” as a tag line.

Not to Be Outdone

AMD, based in Sunnyvale, California, doesn’t want to be outdone by its competitor. The chip maker originally used “AMD LIVE!” to promote movies and artists and their songs that were created using AMD-based computers. Now it’s extending that brand to target consumers looking to buy PCs with multimedia capabilities.

PCs sporting the “AMD LIVE!” brand will start to show up in the marketplace in mid-2006. The company will set aside marketing dollars for computer makers that allow the AMD brand to appear on their PCs. AMD declined to say how much money it’s budgeted for the marketing effort.

AMD also is partnering with Microsoft in launching a web site, www.amd.com/amdlive for musicians and movie makers who use AMD-based computers and Microsoft’s software to create content.
