Prove ethnic cleansing and I'd quit: Abdullah

In a statement reflective of the growing tension in Malaysia over ethnic clashes, the country’s Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi on Sunday offered to resign if the allegation of ethnic cleansing of Indian Tamils was proved.

Outraged at the allegations levelled against his government by a local Hindu group, Badawi said the statements were aimed at dividing Malaysia.

"I rarely get angry but this time I am very angry and this is something I cannot accept," Abdullah was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

He condemned the Hindu Indian Rights Front for trying to lobby Britain for an emergency resolution in the United Nations condemning the incidents in the country.

He said Hindraf was making baseless allegations and wanted the UK to move an emergency UN resolution condemning ethnic cleansing in Malaysia.

“Tell me do you believe there is ethnic cleansing in Malaysia? Is there ethnic cleansing, tell me? If this happened I will resign," the paper quoted him as saying.

He said Malaysians would not believe it and even the Indians who are Hindus did not believe it.

"Ethnic cleansing was perpetrated in Bosnia where the Serbs attacked the Bosnians to chase them out and make them non-existent. It was backed by the state. We do not do this here."

Tension has spiralled in Malaysia since last Sunday when close to 10,000 Tamils protesting alleged discrimination were attacked by the country's police.

Ethnic cleansing is definitely not what happens. (WWI, Some events in Eastern Europe during the 90s, etc etc.)

This is what they call spin doctoring...

NO ONE mentioned anything about ethnic cleansing BEFORE our most "esteemed" PM, Badawi. By claiming that Hindraf is accusing the government of something as nonsensical as ethnic cleansing, Badawi is trying to make Hindraf's much more modest claims of racial discrimination look like outright lies.

Dear Badawi, in case you are DEAF, you can read my words - no one has accused you or the Malaysian government of ethnic cleansing, but it is a FACT that Malaysia practices POSITIVE racial discrimination. I would call it reverse apartheid but that would be a hard term to swallow. After all, we have been champions of the oppressed black South Africans against the racist apartheid laws.

Acknowledging that we not only practice the same kind of racial discrimination officially, but also FOR the majority, would make us look a LOT worse than the white South Africans whom we so heartily condemned in the name of justice and equality not too many years ago. So, let's forget about ethnic cleansing. IMHO, racial discrimination is bad enough. Don't you think so?

I bet Najib, Nazri and Khairy are smiling now... Time to take him down... since he has offered himself.

Nah... Najib is famous as a fence-sitter. Unless Badawi is on the ground, on his back, bleeding from a knife in his belly; he won't come down to finish him off.

As for Nazri, he's only good as a vicious dog to snap and bark at the opposition. Like Najib, he never comes up with anything original. So, he will just sit on the same fence as Najib and see who's winning. Then he will slink down and nuzzle the leg of the victor.

As for Khairy... He still needs his father-in-law. AFAIK, many in UMNO detest him, especially Najib. Yet, he is the only one with the ambition and drive to pull this off. He can marry Badawi's daughter just to get where he is. I don't think he will mind knifing Badawi in the back if that gets him there.

Hmm... well, I'm pretty sure they *did* not attempt any ethnic cleansing at all! But surely, some discrimination could be clearly seen. Well, Al-Jazeera's have newer reports too nowadays if they have been there.
