Samsung 7.7-Megapixel DMB Camera Phone

Photos and specifications of Samsung’s upcoming and still unannounced SCH-B500 7.7-Megapixel cameraphone have emerged.

This 18.5mm thick slider will feature a whopping 7.7-Megapixel camera (highest resolution on the market), 3x optical zoom, DMB TV reception, TV-output, landscape view, MP3 audio playback, and microSD memory card storage.

Pricing and availability has not been determined, but the SCH-B500 could be released to SK Telecom subscribers in the Korean region in the next few weeks with worldwide availability to follow shortly.

The new SCH-B500 looks like a combination of Samsung’s SCH-V770, except that its keypad could be an attachment or simply a slide out form factor design. The camera module is able to do 3x optical zoom and has a really high resolution.

Last year, more than 75 million cameraphones were sold worldwide. Are they just a consumer fad, or do they have the potential to be a useful business tool? The typical camera phone has a 1-Megapixel camera - about one-tenth the pixels of a decent stand-alone digital camera.

The images look okay on the mobile handset’s tiny display, but they are slightly fuzzy when displayed at one-quarter screen size on a PC. Prints are simply impractical. The SCH-B500 looks set to change all that.

Other issues are confronting camera phones. Higher-resolution camera phones will need flash capability to overcome poor lighting (most 1-Megapixel models don't have a flash) However, the flash integrated with the SCH-B500 should be good enough for taking a picture of a nearby person's face but not good for much else.

Another problem is that digital camera's zoom capability simply enlarges a section of the original image. A zoom is needed to capture sharp close-ups. The SCH-B500 sports an impressive 3x optical zoom lens, which rivals most entry-level digital cameras. The SCH-B500 is actually Samsung’s second 7-Megapixel camera. The first, the SCH-M709, was announced last October and still hasn’t made it over to Europe.
