Exclamation Sony Vaio VGN-T17GP SUPER LAGGED, PLZ help

Hi
,
I've had my sony vaio vgn-t17gp for about 2.5 years now and it worked really well.

specs:
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/noteboo...074641p,00.htm

The problem just started happening about a week ago and I think I know what could be wrong with it but I'm not 100% sure.

One day I woke up and I was ready to get going to uni. I was about to pack my laptop but I left it at home sitting on my bed. All normal so far, however I left my electric heating blanket on and my laptop was in hibernation.

When I picked up the laptop, the base was very hot, and I was afraid I fried the insides. The desktop was virtually frozen except the mouse; anything i double clicked took 30 seconds to open. So I restarted. When the black screen with the windows logo and the green bars move left to right, I used to count how many times it would pass...before it took maybe 12 or 15, now it takes about 40. When I punch in my password at the login, The windows chime occurs but the screen is still in the logon page. About 20 seconds later, my desktop shows but all the icons take ages to load...basically from then on everythin takes ages to load and I get fustrated.

I did defrag, uninstalled unessesary programs, went to ms config and only allowed important programs to run on start up. I went to trend micros online virus scanner and nothing showed up...adaware, spybot, reg cleaner, disk check everything...no results...I dont relly wanna format unless thats the last resort.

However, sometimes the computer acts worser (i know its not a real word) on some days, sometimes it takes half as long, but either way, its still slower than it usually was.

I bought this of a friend whom has left to overseas, and warranty is obviously not an option.

The only other thing is that the hardrive is making a funny sound...not a ticking sound as ive read in some forums as the ticking bomb about to implode. It more like...ok try this..
say the word cat without the "at" so your stuck on the "c" sound which is really a "k" sound. in other words is the sound of a hardrive thinking....but, it starts and stops. I measured the repetitions and it makes the sound every half second like as if you counting "one and a two and a three"...the sound occurs at the "one" and the "and" and the "two" etc.
But this only makes that sound at startup and when I open something like my computer or a file or program.

Browsing the net is speedy as normal, downloading is also the same.

Sorry I tried to make this as detailed as possible so I could get the most accurate diagnosis. I dont really wann open it up coz I probably make things worse...

Spit stuff at me...Like the Diagnostic team in HOUSE

Well, it does sound to me as if a harddisk replacement is needed soon.
If your network speed is alright, then its most likely to be an I/O problem.

See if you can find some hardware diagnostics software and run that on your harddisk. The sounds that it makes do not sound healthy indeed.

Unhappy

Are there any hardware diagnostic software that you would recomend? I don't know exactly what i'm looking for. I did find one site that had all these benchmark programs but all the mirrors didnt work, i think the site is old.

It may be a fan problem but how would that directly lag my comp when I just turn it on? I downloaded speed fan to monitor my HDD temp and motherboard temp. When I start up theyre about 22-27C, but after prolonged use they reach at about 45. Is that hot? I did find it unusual though that the program didnt detect any fans...I just thought maybe the program wasnt the most compatible for my laptop?

Temperature's pretty normal. As for hardware diagnostic software, don't think I can really recommend any, as I only touch windows like once in a blue moon.
