Yes, the important aspect of notebook is mobility. But the thing is, do you need GAMING MOBILITY? If you answer YES, A BIG SOUNDING YES, then this discussion is virtually pointless, because you have already made up your mind and you WANT a mobile gaming PC no matter what.

I've always wanted a notebook so I can work on the go. But then I hardly go anywhere. So I will always upgrade my desktop.

I couldn't justify the need for mobile gaming notebooks. You have to pay more (than desktop) to get less (performance than desktop).

Hmm.. Well, it's not as fast as the Go 7900 GTX but it uses half as much power, and produces a lot less heat.

Well, if you have a power brick, it would last forever.

Yeah, it's a lot cheaper, of course... Well, it's really not for those who want to game everywhere, although that's one possibility. It's also for those who want to bring their work wherever they are... like me.

Sigh... But if you want to look at it in a positive light, well, it makes for a really good workout!

Err.. Not really. I'm actually quite concerned about the build quality and the weight.

Look at it from this POV. If I need to get a Merom-based notebook, it's going to cost me about RM 6-7K anyway. This price is for most configurations which come with a 14.1" or 15.4" widescreen panel, a low-end GPU like a X1300 or X600 and 1GB of DDR2 RAM.

That's why the Dell Inspiron 9400 is so enticing. For about the same amount of money, I can get a 17" LCD panel, a high-end GPU (Go 7900 GS) and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. Even for work purposes, the 17" panel would be heavenly.

Being able to game as well on this laptop is the added bonus, not the killer feature. Of course, if I can game on this laptop, then I don't have to buy a desktop.

Of course, the Inspiron 9400 looks like a cheap piece of plastic crap - thick, bulky and heavy. Argghhhh...

Er...you are missing my point completely.

If you are not concerned about mobility, why are you looking at notebooks in the first place? Mobility will always be the primary reason to get a notebook, whether you like it or not. And if you want more mobility, PDAs.

My priority is price/performance.

Oh, well, there are a few types of mobility, so to speak.

Some people want to use their notebooks everywhere they go - parks, cafes, restaurants, in the bus/train, car, etc. Such a notebook should be small, easy to carry, light and have loads of battery life.

Others might prefer a larger notebook that will allow them to do more work, e.g. graphics editing, design work, etc. and yet allow them to BRING home the work, without the need for messy transfers to portable storage devices.

The rest may prefer a desktop replacement notebook because they may only need it to be portable from one location to another. If they do not really need to use it on the go, then ultra-light mobility ceases to be an issue.

Of course, a higher weight is never a good thing.

The ultimate notebook would be big, but light and slim. It would also be very powerful, and yet use little power, giving it a great battery life. But such a notebook is not YET possible, so we have to live with a compromise.

LOL! Then go for the notebook I'm just stating the reasons why I won't buy these notebooks. For me, at most I will only get a notebook with a fast processor and 1GB RAM with a lousy GPU, if I really need a notebook to do my work. Gaming? I already have a desktop that can game and do all my work and no, I don't need gaming mobility I don't mind to wait until I reach home to game

I know, but I just don't know if I can justifying paying for a Dell.

I'm going to have to slave for a long time to pay for it. And if it's a mistake, then I will have to live with the mistake for the next 2 years.

What's the biggest problem for me is the fact I cannot inspect the notebook and see if I like it. The only way to do that is to order it and pay for it. What if I don't like it????

This is a bad point about Dell. It's okay if you are buying accessories like a monitor, or even a PDA. But a notebook costing so much? It's a headache, especially since a notebook is quite a personal machine.
