Default old laptop given to me

Hey there,

my cousin just gave me her Sony Vaio notebook, with an Athlon XP inside, but with 256MB RAM.

Agh, I wished that it has 512MB but since it's given, I can't complain much. Guess that I have to put another stick by myself...

Well, as usual, I can pop in a stick of RAM in a desktop, but in a laptop, I suddenly feel so blur!

How am I going to add the RAM inside? The manual book's not there anymore. There are 3 compartments anyway.

And can I casually install Linux, or any other operating system inside there? Must I only install the XP designed for the Vaio?

open the compartment, then put ram like in the picture, and slide it in between two hinge, after the golden part is in place, just push the ram inward to the laptop, till the hinge "click"

hope this will help

What is the model number? Is the HDD big enough for dual boot?

Okay - got it.

But I have another problem - the DVD-ROM's in the laptop's busted. I can't even load any operating system in it.

hmm... you can try to install another OS on top of your current OS via an image file. Then remove the old OS and keep then new one. That way you dont need the dvd rom drive.

I can't as well.

The worst thing is, I have to do a network install, which is extremely painful and tedious to understand.

I have the nearest idea of having a floppy boot device with USB, then pop in the usb thumbdrive with the operating system inside.

Wow, that's expensive!

I have another idea - what about me getting the cheap USB external enclosure, and then rip out the HDD, put it inside the enclosure, copy the contents of the operating system installer, and then transfer it back to the laptop?

why don't get 5,25'' enclosure, then rip out a dvd-rom from someone

if you want to copy the installer, should be done with the hdd with two partition.
or can just try to copy it to a thumbdrive and test to boot from it.

if you want to install a linux distribution from a live-cd, it will help you to partition the HD and automatically install a dual-boot loader.

I'll recommand Ubuntu or Knoppix for enthousiat beginners, usually they can work with any hardware.
