Data retrieval after MOBO died?

The 2nd Asustek (A7N8X-X) mobo in 3 months has died.
Behavioir: Random shut downs. I could reboot it, but it would die after 30 seconds, now I cannot even boot, no beeps, nothing, so I removed all but 1 RAM, CPU and graphics, no beep, Clear CMOS .... no go. I give up.

Anyhoo.....I was wondering what you recommend to do about getting data off of the hard drive before I install another mobo. I have a SiS based socket A board ready to go and I know that windows will choke if try to boot with this HDD.

What do I do? Install the HDD as a slave in a working machine?

Best option would be to install it as a slave and either use ghost to make a full image backup, or nitpick whatever you need off it.

You can install the drive into the new system and boot up using a different hard drive and grab the files you need, like TEB suggested.

Or you can try a simple repair-install of Windows XP.

Just load the hard drive into the new system, and boot up using the Windows XP installation CD.

Select the repair option and Windows XP will reinstall the files. You will need to reinstall all updates after that though. But your applications, shortcuts, files, etc. will be intact.

Even more simple way... place your HDD into external case take out all the data then you can the HDD fresh install back

This was odd...

I replaced the NF2 chipset mobo with SiS based mobo, hooked it all back up and set CDROM as Boot1 device, powered up and BOOM! machine was A.O.K!

I am not complaining... thanks for the advice!
