Unhappy help~! is my mobo dead??

i hv an old p4 system using on-board graphic. it was working ok all along but lastnight it shutdown by itself. after that i hv prob restarting back, only few times i managed to go to window and the screen will just freeze with fussy lines display. the system totally hang. subsequent re-booting was worst, can't display anything, not even the bios screen. the fans, HDD were running, keyboards not responding when i crtl-alt-del. no beeping tone fm the cpu.

the mobo has an additional pci-e slot, shld i buy a graphic card to try out or change everything??

Sounds like a power supply problem don't buy a PCIE viddy card to test it out on board should be fine.

Do you have another PSU to try ? That would be where I would start if you get no BIOS or beeps .. hope this helps

i still can see the light on the on/ off switch on the cpu. i also measured the voltage on the spare power connector, it reads 5v & 11.8v. any other ways to test the psu is working correctly??

i hv an old psu on a P2 system, i wonder it can fix it for the testing or not.

Hmm.. Could be a dying motherboard too.

The only way to know for sure is to replace the parts one by one and test.

Try taking it apart and run the whole board, RAM, CPU and psu outside the case. Something might be shorting out the motherboard. Check for loose screws and uneven mounting.

No need for the graphics-card - It'll be all the same when the board fails.

Also, is the processor poorly mounted? You can reseat the processor again. As I may guess, it's a Socket 775.

That's a good idea, although if something is shorting the motherboard, it wouldn't start at all.

thanks for the advice. will try to strip everything out tonight. lastnight i had tried re-connecting ram, psu & HDDs, all don't seem to help.

Good advise on swapping components out. If your voltages on your PSU are stable under load usually it means its ok. Let us know how you make out swapping RAM is the easiest and so forth ... this no beep thing bothers me though especially when you have had it "post" to the OS a few times

damn!! i'd made an unbelievable discovery!! it was the HDDs that were dead! the most ridiculous thing was that 3 out of 4 HDDs were corrupted!!

im able to boot now using a backup OS drive, the greatest lost are my data, some impt doc that i back up on 2 HDDs were corrupted and i need them desperately now.

i bought an USB to Sata adaptor and plug the HDD one by one. only one of them was able to show on my computer. tried installing pc inspector and it prompt me the HDD was severally damaged.

this must be my unlucky xmas. how can this happened?!?
