Yup there is... example u install 4 HDD with 146GB HDD each with hot spare... you will get only 292GB...the hot spare HDD light always off unless it kick in then only u will see it blinking...so you can have 2 failed HDD in this case

If you use some HP RAID software u will see it on the Array as well.... which using different color icon...

I did this before on HP server but desktop i not sure

Oh crap. My mistake. That's RAID3. RAID3 has dedicated parity. RAID5 has distributed parity.

Yup.. so market people dun like to use RAID 3 mostly are RAID 5... Is a requirement for RAID 5 to have min 3 to max 32 HDD

But I think RAID3 is better in that sense, right? At least the parity data is on a separate hard drive.

Haha may be RAID 3 performace is in between 1 and 5.... if i am not mistaken the parity HDD can be rebuild... not sure hahaa...i never try RAID 3 before

Hmm.. If I remember correctly, parity data allows you to rebuild the lost hard drive but you need all the parity data to do it. Just wondering how you can do it if the parity data is stored on ALL drives...

Losing one drive would mean losing part of the parity data. Unless the parity data in all drives are redundant. Crap, must go read up on RAID 5. LOL!

As i can recall the parity got redundant in all drive as well....if not software RAID 5 mean nothing then...

In this case i believe some space going to be taken up for parity... hahaaa ya i need to read out also... seldom deal with software RAID

That's true. I need to go refresh my memory of RAID modes.

For both RAID 3 and 5, a minimum of 3 hard disk is required. Both uses stripes for better performance.

Here are the difference.

For RAID 3, parity data is stored on one dedicated hard disk.
For RAID 5, parity data is striped across all the disks.

Mean RAID 3 no redundency? the parity HDD failed mean whole RAID 3 data is gone?

RAID 5 if 1 HDD failed and replace a new one then the parity data will rebuild itself like data as well?
