Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems similar to the time when DVD's first came out and were region locked? The first DVD player that we had was a Panasonic and it was bought in the States. At that time, I wasn't even aware that it had specific regions. When we got back home, we found that we couldn't play DVD's locally 'coz Asia is region 3!!!

Yeah. DVDs are region locked. But regardless you can play some of the discs that are region free...
