Default No problems with I/O

I think that the DELL BIOS locks the PCI/AGP multipliers to standard values, which is great for OC. What is holding me back from achieving higher results is the on board memory (128 MB) which I can't replace with faster DDR 400. I can do a burn-in with CPU intensive tests at nearly 2 Ghz, but if much memory access comes in, then I get problems. BTW: does anybody knows how to disable a physical portion of memory by software ?

Please, someone help me with autostart and the problems shutting down. I think I'm going to try SoftFSB: the latest version can do the trick but the free version won't save settings...

Why do you want to disable a portion of your memory?

@Cobalto:

After booting i can switch the FSB via double click on a link to the exe file with the command: -file=AAAAAAA.txt

The AAAAAA.txt should be your textfile, looking similar to this:

[CG-ICS952618]
FSB=110
AGP=66

The CG-yyyyyyy is my appropriate clockgen...

If this is possible via double-click, it should work in your autostart-folder as well....
----
And i certainly doubt that your PCI/AGP speeds are fixed. What kind of chipset do you have?

@rangerone:
Great Superpi-time...

Default Some explanations

Thank you all for your help Briefly, here are my results and some explanation:

- I can reach higher speed with clockgen than with SetFSB for thinkpad x31 ultra version 1.4c. It seems that SetFSB is indeed affecting PCI/AGP speed and clockgen is not (I know it sounds suspicious... Results tested with CPU-Z. With clockgen I can safely go up to 132.82 Mhz.

- Whatever program I use, I can't shut down the system without pressing the power button. I'm stuck with an empty screen and a working pointer and nothing else. It seems that the OS can't shut down some driver. Same problem when I try to suspend the system. Could it have something to do with the video driver ?

- As far as why I would like to disable a portion of memory: my DELL Latitude X30 has 128 MB DDR 333 soldered on the MB. This is limiting my possibility to use a faster DDR400 SO-DIMM to its max, because I'm constrained by this 'weaker link'.

- And last: I really would like to use clockgen with the -file= parameter but it seems that whatever I do Clockgen can't read the file. I suspect there is a problem parsing the signature. This is the content of the file I have written:

[CG-CY28346]
FSB=132.82

Clockgen 'CG-CY28346.EXE' is renamed clock.exe
and resides with the savefile 'fast.ini' in the same directory C:\clockgen

evend at the command prompt, if i type:
C:\ClockGen>clock -file=fast.ini

I get 'error reading param file !'.

My chipset is Intel 855PM.

Thanks again.

I look forward to hear from you.

@Cobalto:

Autostart is no problem with my system...

This is an example link:

....\Tools\Clockgen\CG-ICS952618.exe -file=save107.txt
Working Directory is of course the clockgen folder...

My Textfile differs only in the existence of an AGP-speed line. Maybe you should try out putting that into your textfile.

Strange indeed that your link does not work...

---
Is your windows able to shutdown windows properly when your system is not overclocked?
---

I still can't believe, that your agp/ pci speeds are fixed. You could try Adrian's BURST RATE test (HD Bench with system @ default and system @ your overclock --> there should be a remarkable increase in your burst rate) ... - i don't trust this kind of testing too much - but it is the best there is as far as i know..
---
The disabling of your built-in memory is propably, if at all, only possible with a hardware tweak - I don't know anything about it - sorry...
--------------------
I still cannot slow my memory frequency to anything lower thatt 166 Mhz - the system freezes as soon as i try...
Furthermore it seems that the 855pm chipset does not have a NEW divider at a FSB of 133 Mhz... ;-(

Greetings,
Pug

Default hey cobalto

try restarting and shutting down without overclocking and see what happens.
when i overclockmy toshiba a15-s129 2.4 celeron, to the point that the onboard sound gets screwy(109mhz fsb), then windows also acts screwy. if i use my usb sound blaster I can get 115 mhz front side bus stable. windows acts fine then,
if that doesnt work then I dont know.
this dell 8600 I have now flies @2.3 I replaced the heat sink with one from the 8500 which had a p4m in it. the heat sink weighed twice the one I took out. I also heat modded the video card with a copper shim. looks like 33 second super pi is my limit for now. gonna try and get some pc3200 ram and see if i can tighten up the timings a little more, 2-3-3-6
as soon as i hit apply for 2-2-3-6 blue screen. not overclocked my memory will do 2-2-2-5 and gives 35 second super pi. does anyone know if pc3200 would help? for http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/ ThinkPad X31 Ultra Version 1.4c this works on my dell 8600 made in dec 2004

Default Anyone still reading these posts?

Well i got a HP Nc6000 , 1.4g banais. I tried CG-ICS950813, CG-ICS952618 both freezed. however i also tried CG-CY28346 which only showed CPU = 1395.48 , FSB = 99.68, Memory = 166.13, neither AGP or PCI show any info. Moving the FSB shows -1.#J on all except memory still on 166.13 Strange, anyone know of any clockgen i can try? i may have to open up my notebook to see what clock generator it uses.

Default Need help to choose the right clockgen

Hi,
I think this is a great post. Congrats to everyone who has been able to overclock there Centrino.
I need some help from anyone to choose the right Clockgen. I have an ACER ASPIRE 2001 notebook that 1.4Ghz pentium M and i855 chipset. I have downloaded both versions of clockgen to Intel motherboards. Both of them starts fine. So i guess they both work. Because i tried with one of the others and i got an answer back: "the chipset is does not match". My confusion is that both versions show different information. Take a look at my screeshots. Does anybody now wich version i should use?

Looks like both are not exact matches for your notebook's clock generator.

The best way to find out would be to try overclocking using EACH ClockGen utility and checking the notebook's performance (using a benchmark).
