Yeah, I agree. It's our buying spree that's causing the price to keep going up. If they see that there's good demand even at $499, why not jack it up to $599 next time? If there's still good demand, heck, let's do $699 for the next card.
I understand what you mean by the cost and everything. I had no idea how much money that nvidia or all the big company has put into developing new generation of stuff. I think generally if the new stuff is just an "update" version of the older, it's less cost, but if it's a new design (kinda like centrino), then the cost would be bigger. It's true that nvidia really has not add much stuff into 7800 but just add existing features and fine tune few things. I think the cut-down version of 7800 will be much cheaper and that will hopefully bring the price/performance to the point where we can all accept.

while the feature set of the 7800 looks more or less the same as the NV4x series, the architectural design itself isn't. G70 is a new design from the ground up. it's based heavily on the their mobile design, thats why it can be so powerful, yet so cool running.

Not really. I buy things based on the values of other similar items. If let's say 7800 GTX is 50% faster than 6800 GT, but costs 100% more, I won't get it. I always believe in value for money, as in you get what you pay for.

Of course the example is not accurate, but it's definitely not the same in terms of the percentage of price and performance.

Chai, remember how much 6800 used to be when it first launched, I don't htink we can compare the launch price of the new product with the last gen's current price. In fact, I have seen 7800 selling around 400, that's quite a fast drop in the price.

I think we are all too excited and desire to get 7800 if we have the money. Since we can't, we are hoping for a cutdown version or cheaper version to come out soon.

The launching price of 6800 Ultra is definitely cheaper than 7800 GTX's. AFAICR, 6800 Ultra = $499, 7800 GTX = $599.
