Default AMD Quad-Core Opteron (Barcelona) Technology Report Part 2

The AMD Barcelona has finally arrived, kicking and screaming after an extremely long pregnancy and an arduous birth. The new quad-core Opteron 8300 and 2300 series of processors is the culmination of years of effort and work.

Will it pay off for AMD? Well, this is the real test for the processors. All the benchmarks in the world (simulated or otherwise) will not tell us if the AMD Barcelona will sink and swim. That's for the marketplace to decide.

Here's a quote from the article :-
Quote:
"It has become a trend with AMD-ATI to be late with their products. Their products may have been groundbreaking when first announced, but long delays in getting those products out ensured that they would lose much of that advantage. ATI, for example, was so late with the Radeon HD 2900 XT that it was not able to deliver the NVIDIA-killing performance promised earlier."

Default AMD Quad-Core Opteron (Barcelona) Technology Report Part 2 Rev. 2.0

Here's a quote from the article :-
Quote:
"Although we have been critical of AMD's less-than-stellar PR and marketing actions in the recent weeks, we do believe in good competition. We are certainly looking forward to the new quad-core Opteron processors to provide just that. Looking at the most recent SPEC CPU2006 results, the new Opteron processors seem to be more than capable of matching the Intel Xeon processors clock for clock. This will make it most enticing for current AMD users, especially since the upgrade process will be relatively painless."

Sounds like Intel is the only game in town and will be for some time to come.
It was nice while the competition was good

Well, AMD still has a large advantage in HTT, particularly in server applications. Intel will only introduce QuickPath Interconnect, a HTT-like interconnect in the Nehelam core, scheduled for debut in late 2008.

Not sure about the high-end stuff that AMD or Intel offering nowadays, but I love to see more budget offerings instead - like affordable ultra-low-voltage processors, and simpler notebooks or more intergrated solution for home users.

Well, it always starts with high-end stuff, like these processors, which are really for servers and workstations. Not desktops. Those will come later.
