The Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 is now a legendary processor for overclocking. It has allowed more overclockers to achieve the magic 4.0 GHz than any other Core 2 Duo processor.

Join PsYkHoTiK, Chai and Max_87 as they each pick up the legendary Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 processor and see who is the best overclocker in Team ARP.

    Here's a quote from the guide :-

  2. E6850 @3.95Ghz on Air

I have been using my PC for the past 2 months @3.95Ghz on air -
    Zalman 9700,
    Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1066Mhz @ 5-4-4-12-2T @2V
    E6850 @ 3.95GHz AUTO
    Geforce 8800GTS 640MB @600/1800 - Using riva tuner
    ASUS Striker Extreme

I have play games at full spec- Lost planet, Bioshock, GRAW2, Orange Box

So I was expecting water cooling to achieve +4.5Ghz

That's a really nice overclock on air. What's the temp like?

Could have been PsYkHoTiK's memory modules. His original OCZ Reapers got busted. He will be retesting once he gets them back from OCZ.

4.5GHz with watercooling? :haha: Are you serious? We are talking about Prime95 stable here, not just bench-able or for suicide shots.

Did you test your PC with Prime95? Games don't stress CPU that much.

Prime95. Is this what your running? (click link)Benchmarks

Or is it some other program? Post a good download site to get it from please.

    I once oc'ed my e6600 to 3.6G just long enough to get a 14 second superPI 1 meg.:D

So far I have never had a bsod on trinity.:)

Yeah, it should be tested with Prime95 before it can be really called stable.

Yup, that's the one. The charts are showing the benchmark results. We only use the torture test to test the stability of our system.

File attached, get it here  This is the multi threaded version for multi core processors.

I can boot and bench well over 4GHz and let it run just fine. It would fail prime like 4-5hours later though.

A point we made was to use low voltage as well. :)

    So there you have it.
    1) Lowest voltage possible
    2) mutiple 12 hour and maybe a single 24 hour prime (rock solid). No concessions were made for stability.

  9. Ok will put it thorugh prime95 yest and will report back.

    Wow... I can't wait to do a 3GHz on a E4300 if I got it cheap... :haha:

With the BSEL mod, and an overclocking board.

seriously, what if prime fails after 24hrs? :p

I've been running that since February
It wasn't terribly cheap at that time though :?

Run Test 1 (Small FFT) on the prime 95 that max posted above.

Also get a cpuz link up (like the one in my forum sig)

and a screenie of your settings while priming (showing load and time elapsed).

We can help you improve things and you can share your settings with everyone (the wonders of a community! :) ).

    All the best! :thumb:

LMAO! Well if you waited that long and it failed, its time to pwn bishes in games.

    LOL!

the best way to stress your system is to convert 3 porno + 300 from spartaaaaaaaa from dvd to h.264 simultaneously..

    you hear it here first..

    E6850 OC'd

I have read articles and searched the web about OCing. I recently built a system:

    Asus Maximum Formula MB
    E6850
    4GB (2X2) Kingston hyperX ddr2 800 (pc6400)
    XFX GTX8800
    1000w PSU
    Zalman 9700

My question is what is the first thing you change in the bios when starting to OC. I am really new to the OCing world so please go slow. With this setup I thought I should be able to OC with no problem.

Is there a site or book that could shed some light on how to OC properly?

    Thanks!

The first thing you change in bios would be the FSB of your processor, on the E6850 the multiplier is fixed though, you can go down but not go up. Basically:

Front Side Bus x Multiplier = Speed

However, when you increase the FSB, you are not only increasing your processor speed. Your mainboard chipset and ram will be overclocked too.

For E6850, it would be 333 x 9 = 2997MHz, round it up and it'll be 3GHz. This is the stock settings for E6850.

Attached is a CPU-Z screenshot of my overclocked E6850, take a look at the FSB and multiplier

    434 x 9 = 3906MHz

I increased the FSB from 333MHz to 434MHz, when multiplied with the multiplier, I get 3906MHz. However, it doesn't just magically runs at any FSB that you set, depending on how much you overclock, you might or might not require to increase the voltage in order to maintain the stability. In my case, I increased the voltage to 1.43v.

To understand overclocking you will at least need to do some reading and there is no way I can explain everything to you in just a few paragraph. There is a lot more to learn and understand than just bumping up the FSB to overclock your processor.

Here's a pretty comprehensive overclocking guide that is aimed for beginners: http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardware/103676-c2d-overclocking-guide-beginners.html

Go read up part 1 first and try to understand the very basics for C2D overclocking. If there is anything that you don't understand in the guide, feel free to shoot us any questions here and we will try our best to answer them :)
