"You need to make that extra effort to do your own research - read up on reviews and search online for feedback and issues concerning the hardware component you are interested in."

That quote is GOLD! I know this is only embellishment: Log your research, just like you were taught to do in chem class. I lay mine out in spread sheets. It really helps to organize 'The Plan'. And, when it all comes together it is so sweet!
