Default Weatherproofing Camera Lenses

Empire23 came up with a simple method to weatherproof camera lenses. It is designed not only to prevent water from getting into your precious camera lenses but also other nasty stuff like dust, dirt and sand. If you are the kind to slug your equipment through snow, hail and dust storms, then his home-made method might really help protect protect your lenses!

Here's a quote from the guide :-
Quote:
"Weatherproofing camera lenses is, as far as we know, NOT an official use of DuPont Krytox. Neither is such a method sanctioned by major camera lens manufacturers like Nikon, Canon, Tamron or Tokina. Therefore, using Krytox to lubricate and weatherproof your camera lens could void its warranty or damage it. Therefore, please do NOT attempt this weatherproofing method unless you completely understand and accept the risks."

How do you clean the sand, dust and grit that gets stuck to the grease after long use since there is no easy way to get to the dirty grease?

Wouldn't those things mixed with the grease create friction that can damage the equipment?

When the grease used of is sufficient thickness/high viscosity, the dirt and grit stuck on it don't go very far, plus the action of turning lense mechanism actually slowly forces out dirt towards the outer parts of the lense, making a clean wipe easy.

Plus, grease with dirt is still better with no grease and dirt lol.

Hehe.. That's difficult because it involves pressure. You can easily make a camera splashproof (waterproof at above sea level), but once you take it down, the pressure becomes a problem.

I think it's only water resistant on the lens mount area.
