Default Western Digital RE (WD4000FYYZ) 4 TB Hard Disk Drive Review

Today, we are going to take a look at the SATA version of the new WD RE, specifically the latest 4 TB model - the WD4000FYYZ. This drive represents the epitome of Western Digital's efforts to deliver a high-capacity drive for nearline storage in enterprise applications. Take a look at its key features :

- Dual processor
- Vibration protection
- Dual actuator technology
- StableTrac
- Multi-axis shock sensor
- RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER)
- NoTouch ramp load technology
- Thermal extended burn-in test
- Dynamic fly height technology

In this major update, we added a new Better Reliability Through Technology section, a new Time-Limited Error Recovery Support section, a picture of the shock sensors and updated the specifications for the drive. We also made various minor corrections and changes to the review.

I find your platter transfer rate tests awesome! how did you run those? I want to test my drive to see how it does.

Hi JimBOB,

We used the very old WinBench 99, which surprisingly still works really well. If you can't find a copy, you can try HDTach which also does platter transfer rate tests. It's not so detailed but it's good enough for most intents and purposes.
