The popularity of Network-Attached Storage (NAS) devices is rapidly ramping up in both small businesses and homes, fueled by their usefulness and their increasing affordability. This surge in interest has led Western Digital to add a new family of hard disk drives - the WD Red family of NAS hard disk drives, even as Seagate drops production of 5,400 RPM desktop hard disk drives.

Today, we are going to take a look at the latest addition to Western Digital's family of Red drives - the WD40EFRX with 4 TB of storage capacity. Here are its key features :

    • Exclusive NASware 2.0 Technology
    • NAS Compatibility
    • 3D Active Balance Plus
    • Enhanced Reliability

Didin't know Seagate dropped production of 5400rpm drives.

But I think WD needs more marketing. These drives are getting mroe and more confusing to me.

If I'm not mistaken, Seagate only makes 7,200 RPM drives these days.

Eh, this is after their revamp. Their previous names are even more confusing - Caviar Green, Caviar Black, Caviar Blue. Now, it's just colours.

But I have to say their constant changing is confusing. First, they called their higher-end server drives RE. Then it became the Re, with a new SKU - the Se between the Red and Re.

The color didn't make a difference to me.

They are not very clear about their specs in the first place. Green was labelled as 'variable', but it is technically a constant 5400rpm drive. Red is another 5400rpm(?) What's the benefit over Green? Blue and Black is 7200rpm, but what makes Black faster than Blue? More cache?

Actually, the Green and the Red are both constant speed drives with unknown spindle speeds.

The benefit of the Red over the Green lies mostly in its firmware, and possibly a lower spindle speed. The Red drives seem to run cooler than the Greens, and they are tested for a much longer time than the Green drives.

As far as the Black and the Blues are concerned, the Blacks are faster because they use higher density platters and generally have larger SDRAM caches and faster processors. I think they limit the Blue drives to 1 TB as well, while there is now a 4 TB Black.
