How can I flash from FireGL X1 to Radeon 9700 Pro?
I picked up a FireGL x1 for $99, but I don't need the workstation features.
I just want to install catalyst and have control of video overall to watch DVD's.

Is there any way to do this? I would like to keep the dual DVI out function as well.

It's not about the hardware. The modded FireGL is guaranteed to perform better than Radeon in workstation 3d applications

who gives you the guarantee that the modded Radeon is faster ?
i cant see any performanc increases. ok, maybe i have done something wrong.
you see that the most people here tests the modded card with standard gaming-software. YEAH !!! sorry but this is bull****.

its that what i mentioned above ... FireGl for free .... everybody think it will boost their games or 3dmark2003-points.[/i]
bullshit? the mod does not work? your card is already detected as FireGL!

Hello kizunaencounter,

Because there are no motherboard with TWO AGP slots, you need a PCI graphics card to boot up. Then you can reflash the AGP card with a new BIOS.

@ Max_87

ohhh max, i think you dont really understand me.
or you dont want to understand me

yes of course, my card will be detected as a fireGL, but there are mods which changes only the name of your card.
who said that this mod enables 3d-features and not only renames my card as a fireGL in the BIOS.

and till now, nobody could prove me the opposite.
nobody posted already some banchmark of 3d-software.

now you know what i mean ?

marvel31,

If you compare the hardware of a FireGL card and that of the Radeon card, there are virtually no differences. Except maybe some differences in the resistors.

The only difference between the two cards is the driver support. This mod is supposed to trick the driver into enabling the optimizations that are reserved for only FireGL cards.

No, Max_87 didn't test the optimizations. But he didn't do that because he has not experience with 3D applications. However, I'm sure you do. Or at least someone else who has tried this mod.

Please remember, it's not only about the rendering speed. It is also about the quality of the rendering. Workstation cards should exhibit perfect rendering of the 3D model. Not so in desktop cards.

I think there is no need to argue about this matter. Best solution now is to test it out and report here. Agreed?

Oh, so that's what you mean
You are saying that the modded card does not enable the "special" 3d features

Try other 3d-softwares instead of just one You may see the performance difference

I think marvel31 is correct I just think he is having a hard time explaining what he means. After the flash I installed the latest ATi driver package for the FireGL X2 256MB (after removing the old 9800 Pro drivers).

This is what my driver panel looks like now. Note that the card is recognized as a FireGL X2 256MB but all the tabs for "special feature" adjustments are absent. Without the ability to set or view settings for these properties, how do I know the card is doing anything differently or maybe it would if I could optimize the settings that aren't there?

I modded my 9700 pro into a X1-128 yesterday, but noticed that only the direct-X part of the drivers installed (and hydravision). The control panel problem can be fixed simply by installing the latest catalyst control panel from ATI's gaming cards. I think a modded OpenGL driver may still be needed though, because I cannot play MOHAA anymore due to a "can not load OpenGL subsystem" error. Gonna try to figure out a workaround now ^^.
