Hey all, I'm about to do this little mod - with a pencil.
I already have one of those lovely ~5cm high, fine finned, stock barton coolers - lapped and drilled ofcourse - some, tbh, dissappointing copper ramsinks that dont have a lot of surface area and are more block than fin and a nice overclock.

Currently my dud 9800pro (Xpertvision 9800se - 1 damaged pipeline is my guess based on the soft&hardmod) is at 460/375(750) so I'm not actually expecting that much more. I'd cheer if I hit 500/800 but who knows. It's currently not bad at all for a 4 pipe radeon.

I have a problem.

The card looks identical to the reference 9800pro design, the chips are the in the same places and I can measure the voltages in the same places but the 2 chips have different numbers. I figure if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck... but it cant hurt to confirm.

So, my core is running at 1.65v. I aim to hit around 1.8-1.9v and it's chip has these codes:

SC1175CSW
0348 G35377-1

And my ram is running at 2.7v. I aim to bring that up slightly to 2.85v and it's chip has these codes:

SC6522CB
P3400B3C

The chips look identical to the ones in the pictures but the codes differ. Does anyone know if these chips are equivalent electrically?

Help much appreciated.

Huh? We already showed you where to draw the lines in the pictures!

If you can't see the lines clearly, click on the picture for a larger view.

Well I did it. Turns out that the chips with different numbers do the same thing
I didnt have much luck with the memory - it was already at 2.7 I think I may have managed to get 2.72 or something lame like that. There really isnt enough room on the side of the chip for a decent amount of graphite.

The gpu however I took from 1.65 to 1.78. A handy improvement that got me from 460 to 475mhz. Still fine tuning it but either way I'm nearly 100mhz over stock.

It didnt make a massive improvement to 3dmark 2001 (16780) and I havent tried 2003 yet (takes forever)

Still it's not bad for a failed 9800pro.

LOL! Well, what purpose would there be to just draw lines on the chip packaging?

Our objective in the pencil mod is to connect TWO pins on the chip. Let me quote from the guide :-

Quote:
All you need to do now is pencil a line connecting pin 18 with pin 20 as shown in the picture above. Make sure you put a decent amount of graphite where the pins protrude out of the chip's plastic body to ensure a proper connection.
As you can see, the first sentence itself states that the pencil is drawn to connect pins 18 and 20.

And the second sentence stresses that you should put enough graphite on the pins to ensure a proper connection.

If you do not connect the pins properly using graphite, then the mod won't work.

Hope that helps you some!
