PENANG, May 13, 2015 – Malaysia will be represented by twelve Form 4 and Form 5 students at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) taking place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

Intel ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science competition where approximately 1,700 high school students from over 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for about US$4 million in prizes.

Local students have competed at every Intel ISEF since 1999, with one school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Lintang, bringing home the most wins.

Last year, Faye Jong Sow Fei from SMK Batu Lintang bagged the most wins for Malaysia in Intel ISEF history. She received the First Award of US$3,000 in the Environmental Management Category, Top Winner of the Best of Category consisting of US$5,000 and US$1,000 for her school and the affiliated fair she represents, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to attend the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Warsaw, Poland, where she was awarded a Host Award of EUR2,500 sponsored by Powszechny Zakl’ad Ubezpieczen.

Faye is the school’s third consecutive Intel ISEF winner and this year, it hopes to make Leslie Chai Jia Le its fourth. Leslie’s project, titled ‘Biowaste to Biosorbent’,is about using chicken bones to treat and remove heavy metals in industrial wastewater, focusing mainly on the galvanizing industry. His project won first prize at the National Science and Engineering Innovation Competition 2014.

“While we’re always striving to outdo our previous successes, I’m already very happy with what we’ve achieved so far. I wish the students all the best in the United States – make Malaysia proud!” said Madam Lim Yee Chuen, Chemistry Teacher at SMK Batu Lintang and Teacher Advisor to Leslie and four of the past Intel ISEF Winners from the school.

The twelve finalists, including students from Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Sekolah Menengah Sains Tuanku Syed Putra, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Kenangan, Kolej Tunku Kurshiah, Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Muar, and Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Langkawi, will be exhibiting a variety of projects this year such as an orange peel based UV window shield, a herbal supplement to help diabetics lower blood-sugar levels and vehicular emission filters made from rice husks. Finalists’ independent science projects will be reviewed and judged by doctoral level scientists at Intel ISEF.

“Innovation can come from an early age – indeed, some of the best ideas we’ve seen so far have come from young minds brimming with fresh, new perspectives. Intel believes these upcoming leaders will be the key to unlocking the future, coming up with great ideas for issues close to their heart and homes,” said Abdul Rahman Abu Haniffa, Director, Public Affairs, Intel Malaysia. “We wish the Malaysian delegation all the very best in this year’s competition and hope that they will come home enriched with the knowledge and new experiences from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.”

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair honors the world’s most promising student entrepreneurs, innovators and scientists. From May 10-15, approximately 1,700 young scientists, engineers, next-generation entrepreneurs and makers will convene in Pittsburgh for the final competition.

These finalists were selected from 422 affiliate fairs in more than 75 countries, regions and territories by an affiliated, local competition and receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. At the competition, finalists are judged by hundreds of science, engineering and industry professionals who have a Ph.D. or equivalent (six years of related professional experience) in one of the scientific disciplines.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2015 is funded jointly by Intel and the Intel Foundation with additional awards and support from dozens of other corporate, academic, governmental and science-focused organizations.
