When I start the computer with the 40g drive jumper set as a master and the 160g drive jumper set to a slave (or the reverse) the BIOS hangs it up before even getting to windows. I am unable to get to the BIOS setup screen until I remove one of the drives.

The motherboard is an INTEL D865GVHZ with BIOS version 24. The last update was 25, but there is nothing in the release notes about a fix related to this.

For troubleshooting:

1. I have removed the 80 wire IDE2 cable and the associated DVD drive and have swapped this cable with IDE1 in case of a wire breakage. This had no effect.

2. A visual inspection of all pins and connector did not uncover any problems

3. I have installed another 40g in place of the 160g and the two 40g drives work fine together. Also tried the extra 40g drive with the 160g and the hang up recurred.

4. The 160g drive was temporarily installed in another computer in the same configuration except with an existing 80g as the master and the drives worked okay.

5. The Bios works properly with only one drive installed, either the 40g or the 160g with the jumpers set to single drive.

6. Varied the jumper setting to the different combinations to determine the effect: With the jumpers set to slave/slave or master/master or single/master or single/single the Bios continues and shows that the 160g drive is available, but no 40g drive. All other combinations hang up the BIOS.

Can you mix 24 (older 40GB drive) and 48 bit (newer 160GB drive) Logical Block address' drives on the same system?

Try a different power molexe conector.

Try setting both drives to cable select jumper, instead of Master and Slave. WD are usually problematic when you fix the master and slave.

Another option is to slave the DVD drive to the 40GB HD on the primary IDE and leave the 160GB to be a master on the secondary IDE.

Primary IDE Master : 40GB
Primary IDE SLave : DVD

Secondary IDE Master: 160GB
Secondary IDE Slave: none

Yeah, that's a great idea. Even CD-ROM drives have a problem with Master / Slave. These days, I prefer to simply use Cable Select, if I cannot give each IDE drive its own cable / IDE channel.

My feeling is that it has to be the motherboard not the HD. The 160g works fine in your machine and the 120g works fine in the INTEL. So what I am going to do is blow off the 160g relative to the INTEL and use the 120g. It just represents ghosting two machines instead of one. However I might try to update the motherboard BIOS to the latest update just to make sure that INTEL didn’t forget to document the fix Anyway, thanks for attempting to come up with a fix.

IMHO, always a good idea to update the BIOS. I fixed more than a few odd issues with BIOS updates that did not list them as fixes.

Oh btw, it's always a good idea to use the 80-conductor IDE cable, instead of the older 40-conductor cable.

does the master/slave setting allow you to overcome the limitations of your mobo.

i.e if a otherboard only supports 6 sata devices. would you be able to set one as a slave to the other and use 7?
