Acer Aspire One LCD screen motherboard connection

    Hey all,

I currently have an Acer Aspire One AOA150 which has complete working internals but a cracked LCD screen. I just installed windows 8 viewing the screen via VGA and I plan on turning everything into a tablet. I have seen the many solder less touchscreen kits available and plan to use one but here's my question. I would like to use an LCD screen larger than the 8.9 in stock replacement but is this even possible? I would believe that a larger screen from another acer model may have the same connection to the motherboard as mine but I am not sure. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Tony

    Research:

    I currently have:
-Acer Aspire One AOA-150 everything minus the screen
    -running Windows 8
    -120gb HDD
-1, soon to be 1.5 GB Ram
    -Intel Atom 1.66ghz

My project with this netbook is to turn it into a touchscreen tablet. My ultimate fallback option is to buy a replacement 8.9in screen and add a solderless touchscreen kit overlay then build a custom case for everything.

I want to know if their are any other options as far as LCD screens that may be compatible with the onboard Intel R 945gme express chipset video card.

My preference would be to use the 10.1 inch screen found on other Acer Netbooks but I do not know if they are compatible.

This is what I know so far through research.
    -Stock Screen Replacement Size: 8.9"
-Stock Screen Replacement Resolution: WSVGA 1024X600
-Backlight Illumination: LED - 40 Pin
-The connector cable from the motherboard to the screen is the ZG3 LCD cable part number: DDOZG5TH100

    AAO D250 Series 10.1in screen
    -10.1 inch widescreen (8.74x4.92)
    -WSVGA (1024x600)
    -40 pin LED socket

Looking at the specs I would assume it would work. Any information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I have been working hard on this project and I would hate to let my lack of patience result in a smaller screen.

That's quite an undertaking and I don't think many people will have done something like that before, and so won't be much help.

My gut feeling is that as long as the connectors are identical, it will work. I highly doubt Acer (or any other manufacturer, for that matter... except Apple perhaps) would use a specifically tailor-made connector that will only work on one specific machine configuration.

I am not sure how you would get a separate touch interface to fit in and work though. That would generally require an additional connector to pass the touch information to the motherboard?

Yeah, if the connector is really identical, sounds like it will work but I'm not 100% sure.

Solderless touchscreen is probably USB touchscreen

I have one of the earlier Acer Aspire One. You can check my efforts to "upgrade it" @ Tech ARP - The Acer Aspire One Netbook Upgrade Guide

Not sure if my AOA is using the same LCD connector but you can try using one of the pictures showing the LCD connector to the supplier to see if it's the same one?

Here are the pictures of each replacement screen (8.9, 10.1, 11.6) and their respective flex cable connection

I just got my 1gb ram upgrade installed today with usb bluetooth and usb wireless dongles coming in later this week.

The solder less touch screen kit is connected through usb but luckily it comes with 2 additional usb ports.

If you ask why I purchased a wifi dongle it is because I plan to install Broadcom’s BCM70015 video accelerator in the mini pci-e slot. This will allows me to display 1080p smoothly compared to the 720p max this bad boy has currently. If anyone has a better recommendation as far as the mini pci-e graphics card goes I am all ears.

Ill keep everyone updated as the project moves forward

Looks like the same ZIF connectors to me. They are different from the plug in connector used in my older Acer Aspire One netbook though.

That was my thought too.... so I decided to pull the trigger.

Im waiting on the following to come in the mail:

    -11.6 wxga lcd screen
    -DD03LC100 LCD screen Flex Cable
    -Broadcom BCM70015 Mini-PCIe card
    -Altek Bluetooth 4.0 usb adapter
    -802.11n 150m usb wireless adapter

I'll post an update once everything comes in and I get to test it all.

I did run into one unexpected problem unfortunately. After purchasing the screen I expected the 11.6in touch screen kit to be readily available as it is a netbook but I've found they make about every other size except this one. Worst comes to worse ill have to buy an oversized one and calibrate it for the screen size but I was hoping to have one that is flush. Obviously ill be making this decision after confirming the larger screen works but does anyone have any tips as far as where to get a touch screen kit that will fit?

    All the parts came in!

Everythings works great except wait for it.... wait for it...

the screen doesnt turn on... at all.

The flex cable connections match up perfectly, to both the motherboard and the back of the 11.6 (1366x768) lcd screen.

From research I have concluded that my motherboards graphics card wont support the screen.
    AOA150- 8.9inch screen utilizes Intel GMA 950

    AOA751h- 11.6inch screen utilizes Intel GMA 500

I am baffled and after attempting many many many different drivers I believe my next option is to go with the 10.1 inch screen expecially since they do make a touchscreen kit for that size model. Before I sell my screen back and all that jazz does anyone know if there is some form of trick I can pull to get the 11.6 inch screen to work?

    any advice is appreciated.

I don't think it's so much the integrated graphics that is the problem but the LCD driver itself. Maybe that's why the larger screen won't work with the AOA150... :(

Maybe some clue can be obtained from the Windows event logs (assuming you can see and access them, perhaps from the external monitor)?

Well I went ahead and got the 10.1 in screen and shocker it doesn't turn on either. I am able to view the windows event logs but I have never dealt with the event logs before. What should I be looking for?

Sorry I have no idea what to look for either. I just figured if there was any sort of error, it might appear in the Application or System log.

Apart from your issues, I would like to make a quick note of the fact that Acer laptops have lcd issues all the time. They really suck at that. I had Acer Aspire and I recently disposed it off due to these issues.
