You can get a modded wide angle version from a UK retailer. https://joovuu.com/gb/home/91-mobius-standard-lens-replacement.html https://joovuu.com/gb/mobius-action-camera-accessories/86-mobius-wide-angle-lens-module.html But they are quite expensive, and the wide angle is not really that wide and expect corner sharpness drop. Can't expect something this small to have such wide angle. Previously, I modded my cam to accept camera phone type of wide angle lens which works quite well. I only recommended this because it is so small it doesn't even look like a camera. Personally, I doubt someone would break into your car just to steal some China made dash cam. If you want wide angle, you can consider this, which is cheaper, but only 720p. Mini DVR 808 16 V3 Lens D Car Key Chain Micro Camera HD 720P Pocket Camcorder | eBay
Guess what... I just applied for the Hong Leong Bank credit card and will get an unknown car dashcam if I spend RM 1,500. LOL...
You can buy Mobius wide angle from here too. Mobius Action Camera 1080P HD Mini Sports Camera Wide Angle Edition - US$78.82 This is one of the official sellers.
Probably! BTW, Chai, you may be right. Probably no one is going to break into the car just to steal a cheap China-made dash cam. I will probably look into a larger unit if it means either better image quality or an attached battery so I don't have a cable running to it all the time.
You probably have to find a way to do cable routing. There's no way a battery that's going to last this long. Most probably last 2 hours, and you have to make sure you power on and off.
I used the GoPro as dash cam on holiday last year. Was the Hero2 which you can power via 12V to 5V USB charger or it gets about 2.5 hrs of battery life. It shoots 1080 @ 30fps (or 11Mpx still time lapse) and was $200 in a kit with various attachments and mountings.
Hmm.. That's not too bad although it's more expensive than the standard dash cam. Plus it's a GoPro! Did it come with a car attachment? I should check it out...
The G1W turned out pretty good with a 32GB Sandisk Class 10. But unfortunately, I just found out that dashcam with battery (as in G1W) doesn't work well in hot climate especially for me in this case as my car will be under the sun for most of the day in the parking lot. The battery may "explode" or turn bad pretty quickly. So, I've decided to stick it to my mom's car instead since her car doesn't see the sun that much. Now, I'm checking out on the G1W-C, a capacitor instead of a battery, just to get the file saved properly when you turn off the engine. Everything's the same but instead of a battery, it comes with a capacitor. G1W-C - USD 55 G1W-C with free rear-mirror mount - USD 61.99 (not exactly free... LOL!!!) Then I also found this B40 / A118 which has the same chipset as the G1W variants but much more discrete and with better built quality. Quality looks almost the same with G1W. B40 / A118 - USD 77 Review of B40 / A118 - B40 / A118 | Dash Cam Talk Mobius is even more out of my budget. One thing I don't like about B40/A118 is that as the camera is mounted so near to your windscreen and nearly to the top (so that it's discrete), it will kind of mirror your dashboard in the video. Hmm... Still thinking... will need 2 of these (RM 394 vs RM RM 489)... one for my wife's. Wish I'm as rich as Chai or Adrian.
I wish I'm as rich as Chai too. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to turn of dashcam when the car is off. Oh well.
Ok, maybe not B40/A118... this one is still with battery. Capacitor one will be many months down the road I guess, G1W-C it is then, RM 90 saved for microsd card. Woot! Chai... you're Chai. So, you're as rich.
4-5 seconds... lol... Hmm... after reading this, I have my doubts. Capacitor version doesn't save the time/date and may reset itself sometimes. Arggghhhh... Thank myself I haven't put in an order yet. LOL! Complete Review of G1W-C CAPACITOR based dash camera NT96650 + AR0330 1080p / 30Fps | Page 8 | DashCamTalk
Ok... well, read it from here that it does save the time/date, just not the settings. LOL! Hmm... the G1W battery version works ok though. But it's a pain having to remove/reattach it every day. Hmm.. Really tempted to get the G1W. Are you buying it? My only worry is that the Li-Ion battery looks pretty puny, and battery replacement could be a problem.
Bro... look at my post #31, 1st one on this page 4... yup, bought it. Turned out pretty good for the 2 days I tried. Now it's sitting on my chassis. Have to find time to fix it to my mom's car. Don't want to risk it in my car especially during the hot weather. Sure the battery will go very fast. But I wonder if I were to keep it in the car drawer (meaning have to reattach each time I drive), will it be able to stand the heat in the car, though not directly under the sun. Now thinking whether to get a G1W-C or another G1W.
Why worry so much? Battery replacements for these devices are cheap and plentiful. Even if you take care of the battery, it won't last more than 2 years, since they are low quality Chinese made Li-Ion. Batteries are just meant for just keeping the settings, and for the dashcam to shutdown after the car engine is off.
