I bought a passively cooled sparkle 8400GS link here and the thing runs way too hot. Anyone have suggestions for cooling solutions? The cheapest solution would be to somehow attach a fan to the existing HS, but I'm not opposed to an actively cooled HSF either. Has anyone literally attached a fan to an existing heat sink before and if so, what did you use?

    Your suggestions are welcomed.

Highly recommend Zalman VF700 series, but I think that's not cheap.

    having bad casing air flow?

cos it shouldn't be too hot, i had an 8400GS with smaller heatsink but with a tiny fan on it. it doesn't go beyond 70c on load.

It's in a micro ITX case so yeah, bad air flow. idle is 60s and load is low 70s.

Do you know for sure that the VF-700 will fit? The Zalman website page for the ZF-700 doesn't show the 8400GS as a compatible card, but then again, it doesn't look like it's been updated in a while either.

Most likely, it should. Unless there's some onboard components.

I had an old gf 2 MX that I just used some zip ties to hold a little fan (about50 mm) against the heat sink. Worked well, and cheap as dirt to do. The only con is that it might block a pci slot.
