For the third time I've had a random reboot that killed my win XP install on trinity...

What is a solid mobo/ram/cpu combo (intel) (asus)? i5? i7?

    Mid range...

    I would go with a quad-core i5 with 8gb+ of ram.

    All depending on your requirements/usage

    What's your budget?

What happened? You give up already? Are you running 32 or 64 bit XP?

If you are not gaming a lot, even an i3 is more than enough. Get an SSD.

Just mostly web browsing. Would not want to spend more then $700.

I'll be using win 7 64 for the build.

Ishtim, I don't know what is wrong with trinity. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem. Ram, mobo...?

It's like about every other month the pc will reboot all on it's own when I'm browsing the web. Most of the times it does this the pc restarts ok. (thank God) But sometimes not. After that happens all I can get to is safe mode and system restore will not fix the problem. Also I have had checkdisk want to run on startup a few times over the last year or so. It runs and always works after that.

I'll think about that. Who makes the best SSD's? I think a 120 GB would make a good boot drive.

A random reboot that can actually kill an OS install sounds particularly nasty..... while sourcing for parts for a new PC, I'd also be wary about power issues (either from your mains, or PSU).

If you want a like gaming machine, you can consider AMD. But if it's just mostly web browsing, a small i3 build is excellent.

Yeah, if you are not gaming, just get a cheap Core i3 and 8 GB of RAM. Make sure you get at least an SSD for a boot drive. You won't regret it! :D

So what is the goto brand to go with a ssd?

No real preference. Personally, get the cheapest per capacity, and the biggest you can afford.

Yup! Like Chai said, cheapest per capacity.

But if you enjoy downloading a lot of media, or store a lot of photos, you can get a smaller SSD (at least 120 GB) and tack on a large HDD for media storage, or two HDDs in RAID 1 in case you are storing valuable media like your own photos.

    Planning to overclock?

I'd like to have the capability.

What would be some good ram for that mobo?

Not sure which RAM, but I don't think it matters that much anymore.

You may want to consider Z87 Plus if you don't need Wifi. Even Z87-A is good enough for overclocking IMO.

Don't forget to allocate some money for a small SSD for the boot drive! :D
