Remember the movie Judge Dredd? In that movie, the guns used by the Judges could only be fired by the Judge who owned it. Anyone else trying to use a gun not "coded" for him will, well, meet with disastrous consequences. :)

Now, it appears that such guns might be available in the near future. The current prototype developed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology involves the use of sensors in the pistol grip to identify the user. Here's how it works :-

"Owners would have their grip programmed by practice-firing the weapon. A microchip in the weapon would remember the grip and determine in an instant whether the authorized user was holding it. If not, the gun would not fire."

Wow... According to CNN, other possibilities include fingerprint identification. While it's not as high-tech as DNA fingerprinting, it's a really good way to prevent other people from using your own gun! Imagine the ramifications it has for those in law enforcement!

Police officers would definitely appreciate the safety value. Again quoting CNN, "Experts estimate that one in six police officers killed with a firearm is shot with his or her own weapon after it has been taken by assailants."

And it's sure to make the job of prosecuting attorneys a lot easier when dealing with firearm crimes. You can hardly say it wasn't you who shot the victim when the gun's coded to only respond to you, right? ;)
