    Hey guys,

I lent my laptop to my gf, she is away at the moment.

Right now she told me that my laptop backlight kept turning off.
The can bring it back on for couple of seconds by closing & opening the lid.

What do you think is the problem?
Inverter? Loose cable? or just windows ? :p

Sounds like a problem with the lid.

I think you can try this workaround :

    1. Go to Control Panel -> Power Options and select Change plan settings.

    2. Select Change advanced power settings.

    3. Go to Power button and lid -> Lid close action

    4. Change both options to Do nothing.

If I'm not wrong, it is set to do nothing already :p

    Definitely LCD problem.

LCD panel, cable are the usual culprits.

I think later I will ask her if it happens only in windows or all the time. Forgot to ask her that Question. sigh :p

    update:

she says the backlight turns off in windows :S
    like every few seconds.

You mean if she goes into the BIOS or pauses the boot sequence before going into Windows, the backlight won't go off?

hmmm, I told her to reduce the LCD brightness, and it doesn't turn off as frequent.

Now I'm wondering if its the backlight tube or the inverter which is giving up :(

Hmm.. May sound stupid, but how's the battery? Is it healthy? Or is it in its last throes of life?

Battery was replaced last year. The last i check battery had 8x% health. I had her plugged into the A/C most of the time.

New update: She told me the screen is now reddish :(

I know my sister's laptop had the same prob.

I am most likely going to shop for my own LCD.

Oh, looks like a hardware problem, not a software problem. I guess the warranty period is over? :(

    Wow.. That sucks!!

    However, is it a Dell?

I called Dell up once and was told that Dell actually gives you a grace period of a few additional weeks. So your warranty may still be valid. No harm asking...
