Hi I'm new here so please excuse me if I make any mistakes. After I added a 4 point powered USB hub by BIOS went on a go slow, even in the BIOS changing area; I'd click on a different section and it would take about 15 seconds to respond, yet if I remove the hub (I need it) everything returns to normal. I looked in the BIOS and the only setting I could find that mentions USB is for the keyboard, no mention of a USB controller or anything like that, surely there must be something I can adjust to make it go back to its normal speedy self? I've added my computer information below, it's a bit long winded, but I didn't know what was needed, it is from Everest. Cheers. More info No my keyboard is not USB Paul I tried to get an update for my BIOS from http://www.esupport.com/global/ but although I sent "repeated" requests via the "BIOS Agent" I never heard from them, and unfortunately I do not know where else I can get an update from, or even if that would help. One thing I never mentioned, when the computer is booting up the lights on the hub go on and off repeatedly, and at the end of the boot before windows starts the one beep lasts longer than normal. After Windows boots up though everything seems to work alright! Cheers Paul.
Sorry for the long delay in replying,I finally got up the nerve to update my BIOS, I still have the same problem though, when the USB hub is attached the BIOS goes in slow motion. Some things in the document with the BIOS confused me though. I've copied it below. Basically it says both 800 and 1200MHz speeds for a new processor, but the 1200MHz says view! Does that mean I can go to somewhere like eBay and get any processor as long as it is 800 or 1200MHz and swap it for my 450 processor? Hope that isn't a dumb question. Many thanks in advance. Paul. Well you will have to get an Intel Celeron or Pentium III processor up to 800MHz, if what they say is correct...
Thanks for that , I'm going to see if they have any 800MHZ processors left. Any clues as to why my BIOS is still going slow even after the BIOS update? Cheers. Paul.
That's a very good question. I wonder how the USB ports affect the display of the BIOS screens... Not related at all to USB... but try enabling Video BIOS Shadow... Oh.. wait, do you see any BIOS option regarding APIC (not ACPI)?
I've looked through every place I can find in the BIOS and there is no APIC settings at all. I hate to seem dense but if it's not related at all to USB, what is it? Thank you. Paul.
It enables the APIC controller and provides your system with more IRQs. You can check out the details here - http://www.rojakpot.com/showFreeBOG.aspx?Lang=0&bogno=47
OK, if there is no settings in my BIOS to cure the problem, how do I cure it? Or am I stuck with it Cheers. Paul.
I hate to seem thick, but how do I get screenshots of the BIOS pages Guess that's why I'm here aye. I hope you can explain to me what I have to do to get you the information you need. Regards. Paul. P.S. My friend Bee Wah just saw me writting this to you and was amazed I'm asking for help from someone from her part of the world, she comes from Port Dixon in Malaysia, small world I guess.
Oh, if you have a digital camera, just use that to capture the various BIOS screens. You can do the same with a webcam, but you will need another PC for that to work. Ahh.. She's from Port Dickson? That's cool!
My friend has a cheap digital camera, I'll ask him to let me borrow it, will get back to you when I have taken them. Cheers. Paul.
long time lurker, finally with an issue to chime in on im currently fiddling with this same board...basically got it for free when boss man was tossin old gear out... i also saw on the CASE of the system it said Gateway Gp7-550 and im also tryin to find that specific model on gateways site as well i want to make sure the bios is up to date, and ive done some googling, diggin thru HP and Intels site, and im just kinda lost...i ran Adida32(i believe thats what its called off hirens boot disk) basically my board says its a Intel Warm Springs WS440BX Bios Type Phoenix PCI PnP (04/22/99) system bios date also says 04/22/99 when the system boots i see this in the upper left above the gate way logo, it seems to be a bios string, but searchin for this has proved a bit challenging too 4W4SB0X0.15A.0013.P08 does that mean anything to anyone? is there something newer to use? ive downloaded a few bios updates, and im leery of using either of em, since im not 110% sure theyre the right bios files SP11882.exe - it unpacks SP13363.exe - it also unpacks but i dont wanna flash the bios if im not sure.....any help guys? .15A.0013.p08
The BIOS string can mean anything. If you want to update the BIOS, you need to search in the Gateway website for the latest BIOS update. But often, when it comes to companies like Gateway, the latest BIOS updates are rarely provided. You may have to source it from the motherboard manufacturer. In that case, you cannot rely on software utilities to find that out. You should open up the case and eyeball the motherboard to find out who was its manufacturer as well as its model number. Then go to the manufacturer's website and see if they have a newer BIOS for the model.
