Time to update x264 build I think it's time to update the x264 build in the benchmark. There have been huge improvements since r819, the "new" version in the benchmark. Builds now are >r1200. I tweaked the VB script for the benchmark and ran it with Sharktooth's r1181 build (32-bit) and see a 25% increase in encoding speed on first pass and 21% increase in speed on second pass over the r819 build. I'm on a Core 2 Duo, so that increase does not even include the Nehalem optimizations that began with r1019. Let me know if you want the tweaked VB script. I didn't change much, just removed a number of switches that are deprecated.

Considering today's wide open availability (more or less) of the new Core i5 and i7 CPUs (the i5 750 and the i7 860 and 870), I was hoping that the x264 HD encoding benchmark would definitely be getting an update. The most recent build(s) of x264 show great strides in the optimization and tuning for Core i5/i7 architecture and, because graysky's "baby" is being used by many websites in their reviews of these new CPUs (Anand's review, for one, and several others), the problem is they're offering up results that are not showing the accurate performance of these processors using the latest builds. In other words, the i5/i7 can easily lay the smackdown on any Core 2 Quads out there (and I could care less about AMD hardware, sorry), but I most certainly do want to see accurate results using this benchmark. If the changes made to the scripts by AmazingRando can be put into action, along with the very latest build(s) of x264 - and hey, while you're at it, why not update the benchmark to even offer the option of using the x264 64 bit builds as well to show even better performance - then you'll have some very very happy campers out here. I joined to make this post primarily as I frequent another forum most of the time, but while I'm here I want to thank graysky for his efforts in creating this very popular benchmark. I intend to be building an x264 crunching monster later this year, probably a dual Xeon (Nehalem based) beast with 24GB of DDR3 triple channel RAM so, I'm very interested in seeing just what the i7 (and also the i5 for comparison) tuned/optimized x264 builds can do. Thanks, and have fun, always... ps I'm on an E7300 currently, does about ~24 fps with the 1st pass, ~6 fps second pass so, believe me, I'm damned interested in having a monster than can crank out far far faster encoding times. pss I had asked another member to run some benchmarks on his i7 920 @ 4 GHz with 12GB of DDR3 1600 working in triple channel mode, here are the results he shared: Results for x264.exe v0.58.747 encoded 1442 frames, 97.37 fps, 3904.94 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 98.82 fps, 3904.94 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 96.12 fps, 3904.94 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 96.71 fps, 3904.94 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 33.88 fps, 3974.08 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 33.73 fps, 3974.08 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 33.58 fps, 3974.08 kb/s encoded 1442 frames, 33.77 fps, 3974.08 kb/s System Details -------------- Name Intel Processor Codename Bloomfield Specification Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (Engineering Sample) Core Stepping Technology 45 nm Core Speed 3999.6 MHz (20.0 x 200.0 MHz) Northbridge Intel X58 rev. 12 Southbridge Intel 82801JR (ICH10R) rev. 00 Memory Frequency 1600.0 MHz () Memory Type DDR3 Memory Size 12280 MBytes Windows Version Microsoft Windows Vista (6.0) Ultimate Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 6002) max VID 0.825 V Voltage sensor 0 1.25 Volts [0x9C] (CPU VCORE) Number of processors 1 Number of threads 8 Number of threads 8 (max 16) L2 cache 4 x 256 KBytes, 8-way set associative, 64-byte line size Instructions sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, EM64T Package Socket 1366 LGA (platform ID = 1h) Temperature sensor 0 31°C (87°F) [0x1F] (SYSTIN) Temperature sensor 1 56°C (132°F) [0x70] (CPUTIN) Temperature sensor 2 9°C (48°F) [0x12] (AUXTIN) Temperature sensor 0 69°C (156°F) [0x24] (core #0) Temperature sensor 1 67°C (152°F) [0x26] (core #1) Temperature sensor 2 69°C (156°F) [0x24] (core #2) Temperature sensor 3 60°C (139°F) [0x2D] (core #3) Temperature sensor 0 36°C (96°F) [0x24] (GPU Core) Now that's what I'm talkin' about... And if we get an updated benchmark with the newer builds (and potentially an x264 build test as well) those should go higher... who knows how high.
It would be much appreciated that's for sure, and would end up translating back into traffic for this site obviously as people would spread the word (folks like me) about the updated version. And I'm just itchin' to see what those optimizations/tunings translate to in terms of increased encoding framerates, as we all would be. Thanks...

@ Ayakano : Why did you delete your results? @ cnmcdee : Can you tell us your memory speed? We used CPU-Z to output to the text file.
Thanks, but most of the credit goes to graysky. BTW, I'm going to move your post to the correct thread - http://forums.techarp.com/reviews-a...chmark-3-0-a-40.html#post359953?postcount=391
I just moved your post to the correct thread (http://forums.techarp.com/reviews-a...hmark-3-0-a-44.html#post360849?postcount=431), Salty.
