    Pop Quiz...

My Dell XPS using Broad Netlink Dev_ID 1713 NIC. Latest driver.

Problem: at company network when plug in the Ethernet, dynamic IP would be assigned. When get IP, the XP hangs, which requires Hard power off. Noted IP assigned was funny and gateway is the same as IP address.

Work-around: Have a fix IP or fresh install of XP.

Question: Why Dynamic IP causes the XP to hang?

It shouldn't. I've used dynamic IP in XP without a problem.

But it looks like you are getting a bad IP address. Anyone having the problem as well, or just you?

BTW, when it hangs, how long did you let it hang before you power off?

I don't think is XP problem. I think is just this network card compatible with the company switch/router. This is the 2nd time it happened since I use this laptop.

hmm.. it hangs for quite sometime, no activity, no mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del no effect and no blue screen. Everything just freeze, that why is odd problem. Only my laptop is facing this.

I think my home network should be fine but haven't try it since I am on wireless at home all the time.

Try this - go to the driver properties for the network card and force it to use a mode, instead of auto-negotiation. I usually force it to use the 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps mode whenever there's a problem with the card / network.

Nope didnt work. Still freeze. Only fix IP seems to work at the moment.

Let me see if I can rope my brother in. He's a network engineer.

I think it might be this and something else as I see from system event ..

"Windows cannot create registry key Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop. (Access is denied. )."

"Windows cannot access the registry policy file, \\my.asia.xxx.com\SysVol\my.asia.xxx.com\Policies\{82057728-42F7-4CD7-BD3E-BE869FA5A6AC}\User\registry.pol. (Access is denied. )."

I did play around (hack) into the registry to change authorization of reg of some company login autoscripting to disable stuff like screensaver, wallpaper. I am not sure why suddenly this triggered and why on dynamic IP. I'll check again when I am in company network.

Edit: Nope. That was not the cause of problem. No event recorded prior to freezing ..

    Hi there,

    1. Have you tried other routers? Will it cause the same issue? If you are able to get DHCP when you connect to other routers, it is most unlikely your NIC or driver is causing issue.
    2. Try connecting to the network using the WLAN (if possible) and see if it can assign an IP address.
    3. Is the DHCP service on the router or another server (Windows, Linux)?
    4. Does your XPS have 2 NIC ports? You might want to disable one of the NIC ports.
    5. When you mentioned you are getting the same IP as the gateway IP, how did you check that if the notebook hangs? Go to cmd and type ipconfig /renew
    6. Try to configure the router to assign a specific IP address to your MAC address of your NIC and see if it works or not.

    Thank you.

Thanks but not much help since I got no access to router.

    1) I am not system Admin of my office network, in MNC is impossible to get access to the server room.

    2) No wireless LAN available to prevent unauthorized access

3)Not sure what is on the other side, no access

    4)XPS is one LAN port

    5) When the notebook hangs, nothing function, can't even move mouse and ctl-alt-del

6)No access to router. We set fix IP at the my end.

Only happens in company network. Works fine in home network.

Maybe you need to talk to the network team to resolve this. :D

I agree with Chai. It's better to get your network people to help you address this issue. There are a lot of variables in place and without access to proper information, troubleshooting can be quite tedious. You could probably suggest to your network team, some of the troubleshooting methods we mentioned in here.

There is a high possibility though that this incident is only isolated to your company's network environment as you mentioned that you are able to use DHCP elsewhere without any issues.

Do let us know if you can get access to more information and see if we could assist you further.

Per you know internal IT of MNC, they are too lazzz to get off their butt to solve anything. They will take the easy way out of any IT problem. Reformat or having a fix IP. They do not wanna troubleshoot if it involve one PC only. Being me the rare few that uses Dell XPS, they could not bother less. Even the fix IP solution was suggested by me. Therefore they just assign a fix IP for me and let it be. Even fix IP needs ticket to be issued and supervisor approval needed. Sigh, most of the time I just relay on my IT skill then this so call IT support group.

I'm an internal IT support specialist in an MNC... so are you insulting me too?

Is diff... Help Desk usually have this impression that the user is a computer idiot. They would give u step-by-step asking you to do idiotic things.

They would say is your NIC prob. Try reinstalling the driver, try rebooting. bla bla bla..

They have this bunch of script that upon network logon would takes ages for the pc to get it up. Stuff like disable the Internet option pages, disable the changing of wallpaper, have a compulsory ugly password protected screen saver.. sheesh .. don't they have better things to do.

Of course, I already hack into the regedit and undo some of these script..

    LOL! That's their job.

Because if they assume that everyone is as literate as you do, then helpdesk is not needed anymore! :haha:

I've been a helpdesk agent, on-site support, and now backend support. So I do understand your point completely, since I have to call them to do certain things too. :haha:

Hehe.. All help desk personnel are like that. Especially those working for TM. That's why whenever I call to report that my Streamyx ADSL connection is down, I quickly mention that I've tried :
    a) direct connect
    b) connecting using a router
    c) using two different PCs
    d) using Windows XP as well as Windows Vista
    e) unplugging and replugging the phone line

LOL!!! Otherwise, they may just ask me to buy a new PC. :haha: :haha:

LOL! Just say yes, you have done everything, and sometimes you have to bullshit them a little! :haha:
