What's a good GPS nav system to get?

Hmm.. So I can just load any maps I want into any GPS nav unit? If that's possible, then I should just get the best hardware and forget about the maps for now, right?

    It is not so simple.

If you buy a branded GPS like Garmin or Papago, you are only limited to their own brands. If you buy a third party model which runs on WinCE OS, then you have the choice of running multiple GPS software.

I'm currently installing one for a generic WinCE based GPS, and it supports iGo, Papago, Mapking, Garmin.

Oh! In that case... what would be a good generic WinCE GPS?

After using a WinCE based GPS, conclusion is, buy a Windows Mobile phone is even better. :haha:

I would still choose a proper Garmin IMO.

Har?? Didn't you just say a generic WinCE GPS with third party maps would be better? :wall:

Okay, let's say I get a Garmin GPS unit... can I "update" it with third-party maps?

No, I didn't. I didn't say or meant WinCE is better. The one I was using isn't mine. I was just helping someone to update to the latest map, and the device kept hanging. I've never encountered such issues with my phone.

Yes, Garmin actually recommends third party maps, and they are free.
