First Impressions I attended the HTC Incredible S launch this morning, and had the opportunity to try out the new smartphone. These are my first impressions. The first thing that stood out immediately was its brilliant 4" high-resolution screen. Very, very nice. It also seems to be oleophobic although I cannot be 100% sure. As an iPhone user, I found the four buttons at the bottom to be quite redundant. But the good thing is these buttons only required a gentle tap to activate. Users of the iPhone's mechanical button will attest that that single Home button gets really stiff and unresponsive after a few months of heavy use. Using the default skins and backgrounds, the HTC Incredible S seems responsive enough, but one unit which was demoing a Storm Live Background felt really sluggish. The built-in camera is superb. Forget about the high 8 MP resolution. That's nice to have, but what's really important is the lens is bright and sharp. Also, it supports auto-focus with automatic face recognition that worked really well when I tested it today. Apple can learn a thing or two from HTC when it comes to the phone's camera. I can't tell you about the heft because there was a bulky and rather heavy clamp and cable attached to it. Yes, they didn't trust us journo types not to steal the demo units... The Incredible S felt right in my hands although the odd shape of its back might make it hard to fit a case properly. Overall, it seems like a pretty nice smartphone. But again, these are just my first impressions.
Those buttons at the bottom are certainly not redundant... Especially the home and back button. The only difference with current generations of HTC Android phone is the inclusion of front facing camera. What's the battery capacity?
Coming from an Apple iPhone, it feels redundant, but I know what you mean. The battery capacity is 1450 mAh, if I'm not mistaken.
Well, that's true, because iPhone relies many functions using the touchscreen, which unfortunately reduces the screen space. It is easier to use, but I can assure you that all Android users would prefer physical buttons than on-screen buttons. Maybe that's why Android won't be as 'mainstream' as iPhone, but who cares...
Actually, I can see the pros and cons of multiple buttons vs. a single button, or even mechanical buttons vs. touch-sensitive buttons. Multiple buttons offer greater flexibility but a single button is easier for newbies to use (how can you confuse a single button) and also easier to press without looking at the button. Mechanical button like the one used in the iPhone also offers a positive feedback, especially if you aren't looking at the phone itself. But as mentioned earlier, touch-sensitive buttons last forever while mechanical buttons wear out pretty quickly.
You are basically comparing iPhone and Android. But the thing about Android is, you need at least 3 buttons to perform basic functionality. 3 buttons are not really that many, when dumbphones have way more than 3.
You didn't say.. you just "hinted". But seriously, I find that Blackberry screens are too small. It's okay if you just want to send messages and e-mails, but absolutely horrendous if you ever want to read a PDF or view a website...
Well, honestly, I didn't mean to say BB. I was refering to the phones that most of us are using 5 years ago. Not including the numpads, it is common to have more than 3 buttons for basic navigation.
I didn't say you cannot read webpages or PDFs on Blackberries.. It's just easier and nicer to read it on phones with full-sized screens. BTW, if you are talking about small fonts, the high-resolution screen of the Incredible S makes the fonts a tad hard to read but of course, you can always resize them with a pinch of the fingers.
Since Desire HD, they make the default font size smaller. I think it is fantastic! Less scrolling needed!
Yeah, the default font size is smaller. As you can see from the photo, I can actually fit the Tech ARP website full screen and it's actually still quite readable!
