I agree with you that the source may be a little too short for newer CPUs, but we have to take into account the time it takes to run the benchmark on slower CPUs too.

As you pointed out, most people would do a simple encode. In fact, I would point out that most people wouldn't even bother to do a 2-pass encode. So I'm not even sure if the 2-pass encode is even necessary... Then again, the 2-pass encode does show the effect of higher memory bandwidth on performance...

Frankly speaking, I think our benchmark sort of discourages people from upgrading. After all, you would expect a more significant reduction in encoding time going from a dual-core to a quad-core CPU. However, that's not what the benchmark shows. So I honestly think it's a poor marketing tool. Why do you think Intel or AMD hasn't picked it up as an official benchmark yet? :D

    These settings

    --quiet --preset slower --crf 18 --level 4.1 --thread-input --sar 1:1 --output "../run1-720p.mp4" "test-720p.avs" --mvrange 511

    result in

    encoded 1442 frames, 3.05 fps, 3797.75 kb/s

    while ur settings

    Pass 1
    ------
    encoded 1442 frames, 48.24 fps, 3909.88 kb/s

    Pass 2
    ------
    encoded 1442 frames, 9.56 fps, 3962.83 kb/s

    That's a big difference, and quality-wise too.
I really think you should drop the 2-pass, noone is using it anymore. It's not effective. So y test smth that noone wiil be doing?
Also, when doing complex encodes I don't think that performance is limited by memory bandwidth... 2 runs of crf should be enough to get an accurate picture. Also u should use more complex quality presets. Something like
    --slow or --slower
    The latter is preferable.
Since we are testing CPU performance we should use complex, hard algorithms. What's the point of doing tests if we do fast, crappy encodes?
There are lots of memory bandwidth tests out there. I don't think such resources as u have at ur disposal should be used to do such pointless tests. I really hope u'll change ur mind till next version of bench.

Actually, I agree that the 2-pass test is quite worthless when it comes to real-world approximation because no one uses it. We kept it on mainly because it shows an appreciable performance difference in Xeons and higher-end Core i7 processors that can only be explained by their higher memory bandwidth and/or QPI speed.

It might be a good idea to switch from the 2-pass to a single-pass but harder test that you propose.

Well, yeah, the crf or 1-pass is not that important, however I don't see the point in 1 pass... But harder settings should be used 100%.

Hadn't been around here in a long time (last post in Nov 2009) but I had to pop in and say I had asked clayton006 to post his results of that monster freakin' dual hex-core 24-thread x264 crunching monster machine (note the 48GB of RAM too)... ;)

Didn't want to thread-crap or anything but, damn, is that some powerful machine or what? Even at stock speeds - since he's at 4 GHz for a stable overclock I'm assuming - that machine would obviously be at the top of the 2nd pass results. I asked him (at another forum) if he'd do a proper test with the stock speeds so I suppose if he can he will probably do so.

    Geez... what a machine. Yes, I'm a Geek, can't help it. :p

I may get around to doing a stock clock test. I've had these numbers dialed in for a while so this overclock is rock solid.
