    I'm well aware of that.
I'm using 960x512, 512/40=12+. So u can safely use 8-core CPU and not experience the above mentioned effect as there will be 12 threads if --threads auto.
    Also, they say
so 12 threads is pretty fine.

That's not enough for Xeons which can have 20 logical cores.

That is outdated information. x264 --threads=x seems to be ignored - Doom9's Forum

Those kind of cpu's don't concern most of people... Including me.
    Please explain that, sounds interesting.

    x264 test-720p.mpg -o nul --no-interlaced --preset slower --tune ssim --ssim --crf 20

    --threads 1: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869483 (18.843db) kb/s:2154.42
    --threads 10: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869511 (18.844db) kb/s:2156.30
    --threads 20: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869523 (18.845db) kb/s:2158.28
    --threads 30: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869555 (18.846db) kb/s:2159.57
    --threads 40: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869603 (18.847db) kb/s:2161.83
    --threads 50: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869630 (18.848db) kb/s:2163.34
    --threads 60: SSIM Mean Y:0.9869649 (18.849db) kb/s:2164.84

The quality loss (or the bitrate increase in this case) is negligible even with 60 threads.

However, should note that http://git.videolan.org/?p=x264.git;a=blob_plain;f=doc/threads.txt;hb=HEAD says:

Guys, FYI, I'm now working on a new revision. I'm thinking of using a 1080p video clip. Does anyone have a link to a good royalty-free demo clip I can use?

BTW, do send in your recommendations while I work on it. If you wish to help, please do let me know. I sure can use all the help I can get! :)

Uncompressed clips: Xiph.org :: Test Media. Maybe two or three could be combined, if one is too short.

Can you publish a beta version for testing?

    Yes, download it here
    (AVC at 8428 Kb/s | 1920 x 1080 (1.778) at 23.976 fps)

    Clip a small size:
    - and dynamic and static scenes interspersed;
    - frequent changes of color and background scenes;
    - to-noise ratio, a drop of water, and other small parts ...

All this, in terms of encoder, it is enough difficult moments, and is perfect for this test.

Just don't go with a 2 pass like you did in previous versions... Use CRF...
Also u can use several presets medium, slow, and slower instead of 1st and 2nd pass... That would be more interesting actually...
1080p I think will be too slow on older machines... so slow that it will be fractions of a frame and won't be able to get accurate results...
I think 720p is the way to go... if your clip will be short u can always loop it in avs, mix different parts etc...
Anyway, if u need any help let me know...

Watched suggested video, looks kinda simple... I would suggest something that has more different things in it...
Like this one from the package I made earlier. I have it at 1080p AVC. If it's too long we can trim it...

    Thanks, guys!

Yes, I will post beta versions for testing before we release the final version.

Visible compression artifacts. It is not good for testing.

Also: Are Movie Trailers copyrighted? Are you allowed to download them for free? - Yahoo! Answers

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600:
1.93 fps is enough for comparison. The rounding error is about 0.26%.

  11. snayper

We did not test the quality of video compression, and CPU power.
The artifacts on the original video does not matter, but on the contrary - complicate the task of the CPU. What we seek from this test.

    I agree.
This was in the trailers included on the Blue-ray disc for home viewing as an advertisement.
I do not think that the owner of the trailers will be against the use of it in the public tests, but on the contrary, who refuses to additional free advertising??

With such inferences are not suitable for testing any video clips from the cutting of the film, as it is more a violation of copyright law.

We can only make calls to the studio and ask to send a fax with a resolution on the use of theirs a movie ...

LOL, I was talking about Pentium 4 cpu's. Imagine that number?)))
    I don't consider Q6600 an old cpu)...

    My suggestion:

    x264benchmark64.zip

    - Decoding are done before encoding. So decoding does not affect the encoding speed.
    - CR+LF line breaks.

    ---
    2012-02-28 x264benchmark64v2.zip

    - GPU-Z added
    - grep replaced by find
    - better error handling
    - minor updates

    Todo:
    - instructions (I'm not good at writing English.)
    - testing on various systems

A new version would be nice to have before Intel releases Ivy Bridge.

Before I continue developing my own version of the benchmark, I would like to know what Tech ARP's staff think about it. Maybe they have other plans. But if you want, you can modify it as you want.

I am from Finland (in Northern Europe) and my native language is Finnish.
