Remember those things? They are a fun, and a pain as well! I recalled having VHS in my home, that thing was bought somewhere in 1989. It was good until the heads need frequent cleaning, and sometimes it records our dramas in a very bad way! I watched Mortal Kombat on that thing in late '95, guess what - it was so jumpy we had to mess with the "tracking" dial just to get the picture right again. The most terrible thing that still haunt us was the tape got jammed in the VCR and if we took the thing out the tapes runs off the reel. In the end, we have to manually open the thing apart and carefully "rewind" the thing back. What a mess! Ugh, and these magnetic strips spilling out of the tape remind me of some violent movie I just watched! Same goes for those cassette tapes when MP3 wasn't much to be said yet at that time. And CDs were expensive and we could only afford Walkmans (and its clones). How about CRTs? I have a grudge on them too. Had some of these old monitors, each of them have their own nasty problem after a year of using them. One ends up in a straight horizontal line - no matter how much you bump it, it only "opens wide" when you are lucky. Another one just wouldn't start - it makes that "thump" sound and then turn off, and another one with a loud high-pitched whine and gives me a nasty headache. I have personally displaced some more CRTs and only one left (for the nostalgia purposes). That last man standing is still OK, and it's an Acer 15". The other CRT is the Sony Wega which won't actually die after 14 years of service. Worst of all, that Sony Wega has a nasty short circuit. I touched the chassis, and that almost land me a trip to a hospital. The current went straight into my heart, felt a sharp squeeze and had shortness of breath for a day! Since most of you guys are born before 90s, I'm sure you will have all the fun (and pain) of those old technologies!
Of all of these i think cassette audio tapes were the worst! The main reason is you could only get a few songs on each side. Looking back at that and how we now just have simple digital MP3s, it seemed so goofy.
Wow! It's been YEARS since I played a DVD movie, and easily a decade or two since I've touched a tape! I do remember manually rewinding them though... Hahaha! I still have a 34" Sony WEGA. That monster is so heavy, it caused my TV cabinet to bend in the middle!
Yeah, DVD is like... early 2000s. I don't use that HiFi DVD player there in the living room for like 8 years. Tape? I still have that car-shaped tape rewinder because that VCR motor kept dying. For the audio cassette ones we used a pencil and manually turn it. These Sony Wegas or the Toshiba Bombas were the stuff back then, now it's 2014 and it's not pretty relevant. I need to change the TV before Christmas!!
Believe it or not, I have a BRAND NEW DVD player that I never even take out of the box since I received it FIVE YEARS AGO!! Prices are dropping all the time. Get a cheap Sharp LED TV like I did.
Man, brand new unopened DVD player for five years? That's pretty much a record! Go and sell it to someone, maybe you can get a bit of cash to buy a cheap media box or a Raspberry Pi. I'm eyeing on that Bravia. It's 42", LED and looking good. The only one issue is getting rid of that monster crt Wega. No one on earth wants this thing even for free!
LOL! I forgot about it until you mentioned these oldie goldies! Take a look at this picture of my new office. The TV there is the 40" Sony KDL-40R470B. Not a Smart TV, but pretty good TV at just RM 1,250 when I purchased it 2-3 months ago.
They are all in the box somewhere in the storeroom. We packed them up for the move and left them there. LOL! I download the movies that I watch at home, or watch them on satellite TV. What about you?
I use my desktop 'Ginny' to watch my dvd's and everything else. My old CRT TV and VCR collect dust... Since I got my first PC back in 98 I just gave up on TV. But I really have to say, I've been through a lot of DVD Burner/ROMS over the years! Don't ever buy a Lite-on drive!
I'm also eyeing on that TV as well. Since my parents refused to change their living room TV, might as well as put this in my room if I ever have one! Yeah, I used to have one - it's broken. Should have brought this for repairs instead of disposing them. We still have the old Paul Anka, Jim Reeves and Dolly Parton, really nice songs they have! If I'm not mistaken, these are still in my storeroom! I love to get these modern ones but they can get really expensive!
Surprisingly, my LITE-ON DVD writer survived a long time. What was your LITE-ON drive's problem? Compatibility issues with the discs or it just stopped working?
I don't have a proper turntable, but I believe my mother still keeps our mini turntable. It's a plastic turntable for kids, with children song vinyls!
That one doesn't really count! These plastic thing with little holes, isn't it? My cousin had these, in a shape of a locomotive train, and they break way too often!
I remember when copying a game was done using a double deck cassette recorder. Those were the days. I still buy DVD's, mainly for the kids. Never had one of my own. My parents had one, but I was never an audiophile and made do with cassettes and later CD's. Do you remember VideoCD? That's from a later time, but never was that successful. I own a few.
Well I ran two desktops for long time, Home and work. Sometimes running movies 8 hours a day and they would last a two years or so and just start to stop reading certain disks or stop reading them at all. I bet I've been through a dozen plus. No desktop at work anymore, Just little kiki... My laptop. The drive in her hasn't failed yet. But I don't use the drive that much anymore. Netflix,Youtube...
No, it is a real turntable, with proper records. It's just smaller, with a plastic cover and smaller records.
It was not successful over there? Man, over here, it was the RAGE! There were plenty of vendors selling bootlegged VCDs in shops and night markets. Even porn. LOL...
