Intel 975X chipset to support Nvidia’s SLI and ATI’s CrossFire!

Intel’s forthcoming high-end 975X chipset, which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of next year, will support both Nvidia’s SLI and ATI Technologies’ ‘CrossFire’ dual-graphics technology, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers.

The 975X will come with a built-in PCIe x16 interface, which will allow motherboard makers to design boards with dual PCIe x8 slots to support dual-graphics technology, the sources noted.

Intel has reached a licensing agreement with both Nvidia and ATI that will allow Intel users access to drivers to enable SLI or CrossFire, the sources noted. The 975X will target the high-end segment with an initial price tag of US$50 (for 10k lots), or at the same level as Intel’s 955X chipset.

The 975X will come with a 65nm version of the dual-core Pentium Extreme Edition 955 processor, which supports 1066MHz FSB speeds and 2x2MB of L2 cache (4MB of L2 cache per central processing unit in total), according to the sources.

yup. i've waited a good 2 years for them to get their act together and still nothing. more waiting i guess. at least during this time i'm not wasting $ as the 2 year old northy w/ s478 & DDR1 platform still works fine for me.

There have been a number of articles regarding SLI support on the upcoming Intel i975 motherboard chipset.

In order to prevent confusion and make sure that the media has accurate information, NVIDIA is providing you with the following clarification.

SLI on Intel i975-based motherboards is not NVIDIA-certified, nor has NVIDIA signed an SLI license agreement with Intel, as has been incorrectly reported.

SLI functionality, at this time, has only been certified on NVIDIA GeForce GPUs and NForce chipset solutions for both AMD and Intel CPUs.

The certified chipsets for AMD CPUs are the nForce4 SLI, nForce4 SLI X16, nForce Professional.

The certified chipsets for Intel CPUs are the nForce4 SLI for Intel, and nForce4 SLI X16 for Intel.

The reason for this is simple.

As many of you know SLI has been, and continues to be, a significant investment for NVIDIA.

From the motherboard and graphics card solutions, to a myriad of games, power supplies and other components that make up the SLI ecosystem, SLI is a signifcant development effort that requires extensive testing and performance tuning, as well as a massive amount of time and money.

As many of you in the press have pointed out, it has taken us almost 2 years as an industry to get to the point where we are today, where SLI is a seamless solution to implement for consumers.

Driven by this success, NVIDIA has a number of new features, such as mixed vendor support, mixed clocks, framebuffers and I/Os, as well as new functionality like support for TV-Out, and HDTV-Out. We continue to take feedback from the community on an ongoing basis in an attempt to make SLI even better. Some of the new and more exciting content coming up, which we are working very hard to implement, includes support for dual displays, Microsoft Vista and much, much more.

At this point, our focus is on continued development, testing, and QA of SLI on NVIDIA-based GPUs and NVIDIA-based chipset solutions, for both AMD and Intel CPUs.

Our priorities are to deliver on the the new features, functionality and content which our customers are asking for and which are driving our business.
