    Hello everyone!

I've been receiving many questions regarding new BIOS options as well as those that have not yet been covered by the BIOS Optimization Guide. So far, I've been answering them one by one.

But this is really quite time consuming. So I suggest that you post under this topic, all the BIOS options that are available in your BIOS but not yet covered in the BIOS Optimization Guide. It would be better if you could also include any additional information on it (as written in the manual).

If possible, please use the following format :-

BIOS Option : i.e. APIC Function
    Options : i.e. Enabled, Disabled
Description : i.e. Enables the motherboard's APIC functionality
    Motherboard : i.e. ABIT NF7-S
    Chipset : i.e. NVIDIA nForce2

Just post all the BIOS options you can find. I'll research on them and post them in future updates of the BIOS Optimization Guide. This method will allow me to concentrate on researching and updating the BIOS Optimization Guide.

Thank you for your help and cooperation, everyone! :)

    Top Performance

AMIBIOS Simple Setup Utility 2.00 >
    Chipset Features >
    Top Performance: Enabled or Disabled

I've searched the Internet for this option before and haven't found it. I think it has to do with memory latency because when it is enabled, the other memory latency options become disabled.

    Bios Option

    ISA Enable Bit(enable/disable)

I have this option on my Intel D850MV mobo. No explanation in the manual as to what it does.

    Thanks!

BIOS Option : Ram Slew(normal or fast)
    Options : Enabled, Disabled(default)
    Description :Nil
    Motherboard : ECS K7s5a
    Chipset : SiS 735

AMIBIOS(ram slew is available on newer official bios & cheepoman bios)

I had also searched the web for info on this, but found little infomation. All I noe at this point is that this setting may help to increase stability at higher fsbs.

First Id like to thank you for the guide, I use it personally, and link to it almost daily
    (helping the n00bs at [H]ardforums)

Before the BIOS Guide update (which is great :D ) you had an entry regarding
    IDE autodetection
" Reading the individual parameters of the devices used can take up a certain amount of time, therefore, some BIOS have an extra page called HDD autodetection, IDE Autoconfiguration or similar. Using the routine specified in this page, the system searches for the different IDE devices attached to the two channels and reads the parameters. The user is prompted to confirm the correct configuration, after which the data are saved to the CMOS. After running IDE autodetection, the drives recognized will have their fixed entries in the Standard CMOS settings showing a user defined value. As a consequence, at boot-up, the system will no longer have to seek the drive parameters since they are hard-coded in the CMOS and the Power On Self Test will run faster." ECT....

Has this key\option been replaced by the Force ESCD in newer BIOS?
I regularly linked to this entry ( or qouted it and linked to the guide) especially when addressing DMI Hangs and other configuration changes

Im now linking to the ESCD entry, could you clarify the difference (ESCD being the old IDE Auto + ? ) and add an entry regarding the older option?

    Bank 0/1 2/3 4/5 DRAM Timing

My Abit VH6T has, under Advanced Chipset Features, these options:

    Bank 0/1 DRAM Timing
    Bank 2/3 DRAM Timing
    Bank 4/5 DRAM Timing

and the possible choices for each are (mine is set to 10ns):

    [*] SDRAM 10ns
    [ ] SDRAM 8ns
    [ ] Normal
    [ ] Medium
    [ ] Fast
    [ ] Turbo

Do you have any descriptions / notions / ideas / explanations for these? If I'm using Crucial SYNCH CL2 chips...

    PC133U-222-542-A 256M
    PC133U-222-542-C2 128M
    PC133U-222-542-C2 128M

...then to what what might I set these options?

    Thx!

    Re: Bank 0/1 2/3 4/5 DRAM Timing

Set them to Turbo... if I'm not mistaken, the Turbo setting actually set's the RAM to run as 2-2-2 latencies... and this is the fastest one. With the crucial cl2 chips, you should be very safe with this setting.

Setting them to 10ns is like going on 1st gear only.... :D hope this helps.

BIOS Option : AGP Fast Write
    Options : Enabled, Disabled
Description : Enables Fast Write for the AGP port
    Motherboard : Asus A7V333
    Chipset : VIA KT333

Turning this option on should give a speed increase of up to 10%. It seems that it can give you problems with the PCI bus though (crackled sound while playing games for examples, I had to turn it OFF).

I found this explanation at FiringSquad:

    ----------------

Fast Writes is another newly exploited feature that allows the chipset to "force" a PCI transfer to the AGP system, thus bypassing AGP memory.

Without fast writes, any information the CPU needs to pass to the AGP master must be placed in AGP memory for the controller to read. Fast writes allows the CPU to bypass this, speeding up the data throughput.

Fast writes does supply a small improvement in performance, but some video cards don't support this feature. The bus logic method used to initiate a fast writes transfer is determined by the AGP bus mode (1X, 2X, or 4X). Fast Write operations can only take place under specific system conditions, and may cause stability problems. In cases where stability is compromised, the AGP card manufacturer should take steps to disable problematic features without harming the cards' performance too greatly.

Here are a few BIOS options I could not find in the Guide; all are for the same system:

Motherboard: Iwill KK266, BIOS ver. Oct.22.2001
    Chipset: VIA KT133A

    BIOS Option: DRAM Page-Mode
    Options: Enabled, Disabled
    Description: Unknown; no manual description

    BIOS Option: I/O Recovery Time
    Options: Enabled, Disabled
    Description: Unknown; no manual description

BIOS Option: AGP Fast Write (probably same as ArKay's post)
    Options: Enabled, Disabled
    Description: Unknown; no manual description

    BIOS Option: IDE Prefetch
    Options: Enabled, Disabled
    Description: Unknown; no manual description

Those are my contributions at this time. The preferred option is relatively obvious in some of these, but it would be nice to know what they mean. This mainboard was fairly popular; I assume there are still many in use, so others could potentially find value in these additions to the Guide.

Thanks guys, will add them to the list! I don't know how I missed some of them. Thanks again for the heads up! :)

BTW, snide, I/O Recovery Time has been covered in the BIOS Optimization Guide. Check out the 8-bit I/O Recovery Time and 16-bit I/O Recovery Time BIOS options.

I noticed them, but the options for the 8/16-bit options listed in the Guide are numbers, whereas the options for I/O recovery time that I have on this particular mainboard are enabled, disabled only. I don't know how enabled/disabled corresponds to the numbers in the Guide; i.e., would Disabled = NA, and which of the settings does Enabled represent? Of course, does it realistically even matter when ISA cards are quickly becoming irrelevant? :) But thanks for the response.

    Oh... sorry, snide!

Missed that Enabled / Disabled switch! Will try to find out what I can about it. :)

Can anybody give descriptions about what they do and the best settings?
    Thanks.

so what is an AT bus?
and why is it better to run 7.16mhz (if it actually is) when oc'n?
