Saw this article basically whacking the new alienware machine:

    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=6576

Basically, in a nutshell, the specs are as follows:
    Name: Alienware Area-51 7500
    Case: Alienware mid-tower - P2 chassis
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (2.93GHz, 4MiB L2 cache, 266MHz FSB, LGA775)
Motherboard: ASUS P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe - nForce4 SLI x16
    Memory: Patriot 2GBytes (2x 1GByte) @ 4-4-4-12-2T @ 800MHz
    Hard drive(s): 2 x 500GB HGST Deskstar 7K500 SATA2 16MB cache
    Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 1GiB (500/1200)
Optical drive #1 NEC ND-3550A DVD ReWriter
    Sound: Onboard from nForce4 AC'97

Warranty 1 year collect and return
    Price £3,112 including VAT
Shipping £55.67 including VAT - DHL Express
Other notables Logitech G-class wireless HIDs, P2 chassis

Had a glance at the price, and kinda freaked me out. Not only a bit on the high side, but check out the following that I pulled out of the UK Apple Store:

    Name: Mac Pro
CPU: Two 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon (Woodcrest)
    RAM: 2GB (4 x 512MB) 667mhz DDR2
    Video: ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI)
    Disk: 2x 500GB SATA
Optical Drive: 16x double layer superdrive
    Ports: 5x USB, 2x FW400, 2x FW800
    Communications; gigabit ethernet, bluetooth, WIFI
    Apple Mouse + Mighty Mouse
    Warranty: 1 Year

The price of the Mac pro works out to be at £3,164.02, including VAT (whatever VAT is lar), compared to the £3,122 of the Alienware.

Kinda amazing that a hyped up PC can cost about the same as a high performance workstation with higher specs.

Even the chassis design also lar. Check out http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=6576&page=3

The insides of the Alienware looks just like a normal PC.

Alienware computers are always expensive. Not only because they always have the latest out but also because they appear "cool".

Not surprising, they do well even though their prices are insane.

But I wouldn't buy one of them. I would rather build my own.

Now, if only someone can sponsor me the moolah....

I just need a X6800, a 7900GT and 2 piece of 1GB RAM, the rest I can fork out myself. Any kind souls around?

Well, I used to think that they r cool, until I saw the pic of the insides. Just how a normal PC looks like.

Actually, dun even need to go for the Mac Pro to beat the crap out of that Alienware. I can just get myself a 1U or 2U rack from HP or Dell for that kinda price. The chassis on those rack servers is a cool factor indeed :)
