Chinese court sentences former provincial official to death for bribe-taking

BEIJING (AP): A former Chinese provincial vice governor was sentenced to death on Monday for allegedly taking massive bribes and trying to buy-off investigators, the government's Xinhua News Agency reported.

Wang Huaizhong was accused of taking bribes totaling 5.2 million yuan (US$620,000) while working in the eastern province of Anhui from 1994 to 2001, Xinhua said.

He also had 4.8 million yuan (US$580,000) in income for which he could not account and tried to bribe other officials and block investigations into his case, Xinhua said.

Wang has denied all the charges, Xinhua said. He was sentenced by the Jinan City First Intermediate Court in the eastern province of Shandong, it said.

It wasn't clear what favours Wang granted for his bribe-taking or whether he would appeal.

Death sentences in China are automatically reviewed by another court.
