nobody is getting angry, sure some of the words are harsh but really it's not a flame war. the word 'flame' has been used waaay too often in situations that are really just heated exchanges. and no we are not blaming the admins/mods. It's a tough job since they try to please everyone (it won't work.. with people like me ). I'm just refuting some of the points presented that's all. Not the amount of posts! 1)Did you know why Off Topic section is splitted up into General Discussion and Lounge? Because we want to change things a bit, making Lounge a more friendly place to post. So far, we have notlocked any threads due to off topic. Ok, I would like to explain why we locked the threads before we made the changes. - Because new comers would be lost when they check the thread, 'What is this? Why the discussion has got nothing to do with the title?' that kind of thing, not because you post kiddy porns. Ok, why we lock the 'chicks' thread? Because it's virtually pointless. LY forum has a similar thread, they are merely copying the pictures and post it here, and also using our webspace because se7en disabled uploading attachment to the forum. So we have decided to lock it. Not because we find it 'offensive'. And yes, I did remove 'post count increase' in the lounge section earlier, just ask any active members here. None of them like it at all. You can't really make us change now, and expect an overnight result. I think in terms of amount of members, there's nothing much we could do, until they come here automatically. It's not something we could change directly. Maybe posting more articles, changing the way we moderate will improve that, but as I've said, nothing we can do directly and will probably take some time to see results. Regarding the suggestions, I've already mentioned in 1). Anyway, I will probably stop posting here, since it's kinda pointless to me as this thread progresses. yikes!! Ok guys, i guess this thread woudn't be flaming if my site didn't exist in the first place. Anyways, i guess we need to go back to the root of the topic. Why is the number of active members here decreasing. 1. There is a fine line between being strict and being overly strict. I've been around forums for longer then i can remember and this same very thing has happened a lot everywhere. Forums are a place where people come to discuss stuff, and this is done by their choice, not your choice of having the forums there for them. The point here is, when they have the choice, would they want to come here or not? If you are overly strict, they would just not feel comfortable and move elsewhere. This is not a company or an organization where they have to put up with what you dish out at them. The choice is in their hands, and when they don't feel like coming, they don't come. I'm not saying that the forum should be opened to every lost soul to come and post crap in it. A certain amount of control has to be in place, but it should be more of a friendly control rather then an authorative control. I've read about you guys saying the the lowyat forums lack contro/discipline, yes, i'm well aware of that and i am allowing it for now, but that doesn't mean i'm gonna allow it forever. Things like this take time, slowly but surely, we'll move towards a more knowledged based community discussion, but expecting every new person coming online to be a smart ass and exert unnecessary control on them will just drive them away. 2. There is really no use in trying to get international users coming in here. Its an almost impossible task considering you are up against titans like [H] and Anand etc. There is no possible way you can match their userbase/participation levels, and trying to prise their users away to come active users here is gonna be really hard to do. Lowyat's forum are region specific, i've mentioned that before. The forums is for Malaysians, and thats is the simple reason why slang is allowed in it. I'm sure that foreign users have a whole load of other forums out there for them to join and partake in. I don't really think many would be interested in ours, but there are a whole bunch of Malaysian forum users who are lost in other not so friendly forums, and Lowyat.net forums is a place they can call home. There is a severe shortage of forums with local content, so why not start targetting local users instead? You'll be suprised. 3. The difference between a forum and a chat room is a chat room doesn't last. You can talk/discuss about a problem with whoever is in it now, but once you leave its gone. And two days down the road, someone comes back and starts asking the same question all over again. The simple reason for forums is so that the discussion is always there, and believe me, a lot of users actually sit down and read through older threads without really replying. Its always nice to know what others are thinking, plain normal Malaysians on the net's points of views. 4. Why is Lowyat.net popular, i have no idea. All i can think of is becoz there is no other site catering exclusively to the M'sian tech community. For some wierd reason, every tech site to come out from M'sia tends to target outside audience when there is a whole pool of local audience who are starved for information/discussion as well. Right till today, we are only a news+forum site. We don't do hardware reviews like rojakpot does. I guess you could do more localized reviews and also write ups in addition to the BOG, and this will bring in more visitors. I'll also be glad to put up news articles on lowyat.net as long as the articles are of benefit to the M'sian IT community. Whats the deal with doing a review of a smart phone that will most probably hit our shores in like two years down the road. While these might interest those in the States etc, the local users are not going to pay any attention to it, simply because its not and will not be for a long time available here. Well, either way, i'm hoping to see everything here back to the way it was when i used to come here often not too long ago. Strictness is a big variable here. The way it is implemented will go a long way to influence users to come here, and stay here. Overkill it and they will choose to leave. Teach don't order. We're building a community, not a military.
hei se7en...i dun realli agree with u lor.. at 1st i tot same like u...but now i agree with chai and other adminers here... they not strict in that cannot post this or that...they r strict in that if u wan to reply in a thread, must keep within topic..i agree with them lo..cause sometimes i go lowyat, the topic change after a few posts..confusing..dun make sense.. in lowyat.. only one big thread keep to topic... which is.. CHABO thread!!! but really..the place a bit chaotic... cause no one tell them to keep to some rules.. here..got rules la..but not very strict also..now i know what they want..as long as u keep to the topic, they won't bother...good enuf for me! one thing... here they dun simply delete posts...in lowyat...my posts all disappear suddenly..no warning sometimes..no reason also..i dunno why...here, if i do wrong, they will warn me..at most also the thread lock..not just disappear..if talk about freedom, maybe here less a bit but at least they are fair..rite? about international ppl.. i dunno..but maybe rojakpot cannot be local only...look at the bios guide..surely lots of ppl around the world read that...it wont be nice if the foreigners come here and see us chatting in hokkien or all that slang and dialect, rite? not nice at all..juz my opinion la... anyway,... talk=cheap..lets go post more topics!!!
tungsten, if you remember i was one of those who made it clear I didn't think very much about your threads in kopitiam. Those threads should have been locked but the admins were actually nice enough to delete it for you. I wouldn't have done it and I dont' think they should have done it because then, nobody would have known how *naughty* you've been. As for se7en, I can see you are still building up a nice userbase but you should check on some of the repetitive threads that's been posting up (search function !!). It's much much noisier than before but that's expected. You'll also have to check on some of the mods, which are not very professional at times. However rojakpot shouldn't be LYP part two. Neither should LYP be serving rojak Adrian style. I think both serve different users like how Ars forums differs from the [H]ordes. I'm more of an Ars reader than a [H] reader. That makes me neither better nor worse. The same should apply here. We've already agreed that rojakpot has good content. Now it's just building up a nice little community. Both LYP and rojakpot should work together and help educate instead of just 'competing'. After all 'Malaysia sihat, rakyat sihat' p/s I must add that it's really up to the founder how he wants to target this site. I hope you just don't dismiss 'it's no use attracting an international audience'.

No one is competing here. Do you think they are competing? ARP and Lowyat are just doing their job minding their own business and helping each other at times of need. They are catering for two different community here. And I think they are doing a great job. I don't see any problem in that. Do you? Hmm... do you think we are still moving in circles? Why now get out of the circle and get things done? No use talking about the problems when we can use the time to solve the problems.
