I'm running a two pieces of SATA WDC WD15EADS-00R6B0 in my NAS. Lately it is having problem with one of the server S.M.AR.T detected error of UltraDMA CRC Error Count now stands at 4. RIght now I need to determine if this is HDD error or just the cable or really unlucky the NAS itself. Thanks.
But not a hardware error, right? Cause CRC only comes into the picture between the host controller and the drive controller.
In rare cases, it can be hardware error, where the cache/RAM has stuck bits/corruption causes hell to break loose..
OK I can rule out the cable now, swaped cable and the problem still persist. Thing now is to swap a HD. Probably have to take out the HD to do test on my PC.
Ok this morning it happen right in front of me, just before the system failed, I notice there was a sound coming from the NAS, closer inspection it sounded like the HDD is trying to start up but couldn't. So I highly believe is the HDD now.
Just swapped an older Seagate 500MB HDD into the NAS to test, meanwhile I'm running further test with the HDD on my pc.
Ran surface test but no problem, now the UDMA CRC Error count has gone up to 9, even after I plug into my PC.
Hmm.. If there's still warranty, I suggest you send it in. Could be anything, even a bad SDRAM buffer?
Well I RMA the drive, have to wait a month for it to return.... meanwhile the 500GB HDD still holds, no problem.
Wow! Lucky you! They must have ran out of refurbished drives. I think you have the new Advanced Format version.
