It's true, at long last, I'm finally gonna get an upgrade from my Pentium III 997Mhz, 20GB HDD, 128MB SDRAM[recently upgraded to 192MB - big whoop ], GeForce2 MX computer!      :thumb:

Gonna go to Computer Wars in the afternoon to find out what they have to offer. Basically I'm looking for a whole new setup, motherboard, monitor, cpu, ram, graphics card, speakers, the whole shebang! :shifty:  Then I'm planning to go to lowyat and see if I can get a better deal there. [aKho, meet u there? ]

Also interested in a router so my family can still use this current pc to surf, and if need be, use my dad's laptop as well. So I'll probably get a wireless router, in case I happen to come into possession of a certain FTEC notebook... Hmm... :wicked:
Or in any case, any possible future notebook purchases...

Now being a relative n00b to hardware, I was hoping to get some advice on what I should be looking for. CPU will probably be from the AMD64 family [don't think I can afford - or will even need - Opteron hehe]. Unsure of whether to get a Crossfire- or SLI-ready mobo, since I've alwiz thought nVidia was better but Max_87's newest toy has me a little confused... :?
Yeah which brings us to GPUs... Which to get? Anybody know where I can get the best prices? Any contacts? Really need help here hehe...

Of course with this new rig I'll be entering the exciting new world of over-clocking  , so I should probably be looking at heatsinks and such as well right? Whoo... This is all pretty overwhelming... As for budget, well I'm not rich, just that this system has been a long time coming. Err, so yeah, dunno what the budget is yet, but let's say 3-4K? :shifty:

    Now, recommendations please!

the best way to get the best deal is to shop online! once i remeber i got this desktop for about 2k it came with dual channel DDR ram 2GB!!!!! 600GB of hdd pentium extreme edition with hyper threading! windows xp genuine professional.
it also offered a memmory upgrade up to 8GB of ram  but that was like a 5k upgrade! anyways its up to u man! buy a PC and juice it up ur self if u know what u are doing!
or buy a juiced up one already
    and there u go :thumb:

the moneytor will set you back around RM1,300 already. so i suggest pre-using your current screen and focus on powerful stuff with your RM3-4K.

what you must get (i'm pro NVIDIA) :-
    1. 480w+ CPU! (RM400)
    2. DFI / Asus SLi motherboard (RM400-RM700)
    3. 7800GT/X 256/512MB graphics card (RM1,800-RM2,900)
    4. a nice aluminium casing (RM140)
    5. Thermalright XP-90c copper heatsink (RM200) - tried and true
    6. 80GB seagate SATA HDD (x2 if your want RAID) (RM200x2)
    7. DVD-RW (i like pioneer) (RM300)
    8. gaming mouse (logitech or razor) (RM250)
    9. a 80mm fan for your heatsink (RM40)
    10. a ciplak keyboard (RM60)

    optional :
    1. 2.1 speaker set (logitech) (RM250)
    2. creative x-fi xtreme soundcard (RM400)

prices not accurate, just estimation. that's my recommendation! let everyone else throw in their two cents! :thumb:

Really? Can help me out? 'coz I went to Computer War and 3-4K didn't seem to get me as far as I'd like... :shifty:
But but... my current screen is... so... small... :(

Unless somebody got extra moneytor to spare?
    [sell oso can  ]

    3. 7800GT/X 256/512MB graphics card (RM1,800-RM2,900)

Wahhh.....

:faint: :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint:

    Half-to-almost-whole budget gone edi...

You can get X1800XL or 7800GT for RM1400. Don't go for SLI motherboards, waste of money. RM400-500 can get you a very decent overclocking motherboard. Don't have to go for RAID, just a normal big HDD would do. RAID setups are not necessarily beneficial. A cheap dual core like 3800+ should be more than sufficient, alternatively, you can opt for cheaper single core like Venice.

Lolz... RM1400 still seems like a helluva lot to pay for a GPU, but I guess it's more cost-efficient than buying 2 lesser GPUs and an SLI mobo... Is it?

So if I do plan to get one of those top 2 cards, then according to Max_87 I should get the X1800XL, right?

Hm, I don't really need dual-core now do I? Hehe... :shifty:

Well anyway here're the specs the guy gave me at Computer War:
    • AMD Athlon64 3000+
    • MSI K8N4
    • 1GB Kingston PC400 (512 x 2)
    • 120GB 7200rpm (8MB) Maxtor HDD
    • Samsung DVD-RW Drive
    • Tsunami ATX Casing
    • Logitech Keyboard & Optical Mouse
    • Altec Lansing ATP3 Speakers
    • 17" Samsung 793Df Monitor
    • Prolink Wireless Router
    • ATi X800GTO PCI-E

So this all comes down to RM3440, but the processors are out of stock until after CNY, so if I get the A64 3500+ instead then it'll be RM3780. I suppose upgrading the GPU would add another RM700+ to the price.... :faint:

Can I get a better deal somewhere else? :?

    • AMD Athlon64 3500+ - RM835
    • DFI NF4U Infinity - RM440

    • 120GB 7200rpm (8MB) Seagate HDD - RM265
    • Samsung DVD-RW Drive - RM185
    • Icute ATX Casing - RM150
    • Logitech Keyboard & Optical Mouse - RM60
    • Altec Lansing ATP3 Speakers - RM170
    • 17" Samsung 793Df Monitor - RM389

RM4224... Should be able to get RM4200 or lower, maybe below RM4000 if get slower CPU.

i think garphreak havent told us what he's gonna do with his new PC :haha:

without knowing it, it's hard to quote you a reasonably priced one..

    GarPhreak Newbie

Hey thanx Chai... Nice price breakdown! :thumb:

Preferably I wouldn't want a slower CPU hehe... :shifty: Might as well get top-of-the-line now and let it get obsolete over the next 4-5 years... :shifty: Also, would a slower CPU affect the GPU? If it does and I get the X1800XL, then a bit wasted right? :shifty:

What's the difference between Kingston and Corsair?

Can find out if can get cheaper price on Saturday@lowyat...

Edit: Hm... What am I going to do with my pc? Play games, watch movies, listen to music... Learn how to program and stuff... The usual I guess... But the thing is it's gotta last a long time 'coz my current pc lasted around 5 years without an upgrade! :faint: :faint: :faint:

Really looking forward to being able to play games at home again... It's been soooo loooong....
