What are the steps involved to get SpeedStep working? I have an E4300 in an Asus P5B-E Plus (currently 3GHz @ 1.425V or something like that), on WinXP SP1. From day one it has never clocked itself down when idle...and in a country like Singapore, you really notice the heat dump especially when my room door is closed :haha:

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try?
SpeedStep should still work even when the CPU is overclocked, right?

I know this may sound stupid, did you enable Speedstep in the BIOS? :D

  i'm not sure how does a desktop SpeedStep works

for laptop if it is disabled, it will run at minimum speed

Hah. Problem solved, CPU-Z 1.38 did not show the lower idle clock speed. Updated to 1.39 and it shows 2GHz now so SpeedStep must have been enabled all this time.

Looks like I have to address my X1800's idle clock speeds now to reduce the heat output :p

Thanks for the suggestions anyway :thumb:

I'd rather wait for the lift or take the stairs than deal with the cockroach problem on the ground floor, or be woken up (at 9.30am!!!) by the noise of kids playing in the void deck right outside my room *grumble grumble*

I thought making noise in S'pore flats will cause one to get fines? :D

Anyway, have you cleaned up the dust? Better casings have better airflows so you might need to check as well.

And also, Speedstep or CnQ might not work properly in overclocked hardware...
