Hmm... I know about the Cable Select trick. But I only used it with CD-ROMs. I think I mentioned it earlier. I never saw a hard disk having problems with a Master setting before. In fact, my hard disks have always been set as Master drives and they never share the IDE port with any other devices.
From my experience with WD hard disk during my industrial training, there were cases where cable select was needed to let it detect the hard disk. there's even cases where you cannot use it as slave at all but that's on the IBM PCs...
reply from WD Hi, I asked WD why the drive worked for 8 months and then decided not to work. This is what they said. "I wish I could tell you why it worked for 8 months. Technically the drive should have never been recognized by the system. You can see some strange things happen with computers." At least I learned something new, that seems to happen a lot working with computers. Again thanks to all who replied with info and suggestions. I tried all that I could. You can learn a lot from these message boards. I'm glad someone takes the time to set up and run them. Digger
THUMBS UP. Well, I guess I learn something new today too. Goes to show that computers are freaks of nature. Stuff happens that normally does not happen. The jumper setting on the harddrive is a first for me too. I have my harddrive set to Master with only one drive on the channel and I have never had any problems. But now, I will know what to do in the event of something like this happening to me.
Hmmm, no wonder my fren's WD won't sit nicely with his maxtor in the same channel!!! LOL now i can help him get it right!! This have been a very enlightening thread....worthy of a news post
wont eh?.. i have 3 different hard disk.. . . blek ....... primary master is my western digital caviar & primary slave is my maxtor diamond max puls 8 .. havin some trouble with my maxtor.. my sendary partition for my maxtor keep corrupting... no file systemm ... it destroyed my video!~... .. blek.. have to reformat.. ..
Hey zy, Porn or home videos??? Hehe... Best write all your "home videos" to CD. Then do a thorough scan of the platter surface. If no anomaly was detected, you might want to FDISK the hard disk and redo all your partitions. BTW, do you hear any suspicious "clicks" or loud whirring sounds? Something like a very loud click and then your hard disk spinning up loudly? If so, that Maxtor's probably going to hard disk heaven soon.
home videos la....... porn videos will be featuring you .. .. blek...... nope.. its a new hard disk i got not long... a 7200rpm maxtor.. added a hard disk cooler....... ........ no clicks or what eva... dont really trust maxtor hard disk .. ..... no idea why i got it.. ehehe... i prefer western digital
Well, In my case, Maxtor Diamondmax HD's happens to be the most reliable one i ever use... As for WD, only the recent new ones seems fine. but the old ones so notorious until its certain IT department to make 'strictly no WD hard disk!!!' serious!
Yup! Maxtor's DiamondMax hard disks are very reliable. Much more than IBM's hard disks. But there was a batch of Maxtor hard disks that failed a lot. From Indonesia, if I'm not mistaken. So, check your drive and see if it was made in Indonesia. If it is, send it back and demand a replacement. Maxtor drives made in Singapore are very reliable. Make sure you get a Made in Singapore Maxtor drive!
2GB ??? must be the crystalmax era yup... those days Maxtor drives were unreliable like nobody's business.... much like the now defunct Corner.. But their new DiamondMax drives's are quite reliable... But then again... it's all about your luck
did some lil research .. hehehe... let see.... itz 1.7gb actually... Maxtor DiamondMax 1750 (81750D2) ... ok.. here is a Conner hard disk ... a 210mb hard disk.. working perfectly.. 3600rpm.. wow.. half the speed of my maxtor dm plus 8 .. .. ... this conner made by seagate.. ?.. .. yeap.. i think so... CFS210A .. made in malaysia.. 32kB cache.. thats small... my oldest hard disk @ home ... Quantum ProDrive ELS(tm) .. ... not working anymore.. .. capacitor missing.. .. hehehe... came off... ... the best thing bout this Quantum ProDrive ELS 85AT is... : ... 85MB only!.. heh.. ... 3600rpm .. 32kB cache.. ...
i still have a working 40mb if u want anyway, all maxtor old drives was quite unreliable. I once had a 5gb CrystalMax that just went dead.... just like that. Oh. FYI, corner was Corner no such thing as made by Seagate(to my knowledge la). It's actually Seagate that bought them up eventually... Quantum was very reliable too, during their early Fireball era. Before all the problems that came with their 20GB disks.
