Reducing the CPU temperature has always involved newer, larger heatsinks with ever more powerful fans. All of that mean extra costs. But what if you could have better cooling without the extra cost?

For only $20 in sandpaper, you could reduce your CPU core temperature by 15%! So, join graysky as he shows you how to lap your CPU heatspreader and heatsink for a much better thermal contact and better cooling performance.

Cool... nearly 20,000 views. Was anyone inspired to try lapping based on this article?

I'm really tempted, but I haven't found the time to even repair the C2D system... It's still dead. :wall:

...dunno if lapping it will bring it back from the dead :p

Hehe.. I don't think it's the CPU now. I tried it with a different CPU... and graphics card. Still no go. I just stripped it out of the case. Will be testing the parts one at a time until I find the cause.

It's very unlikely to kill a CPU. I have a spare motherboard, you might wanna try.

I have one here too. Going to have to try them one at a time. :wall:

Why so concerned about a HSF warranty, of all things...if it so happens that the fan dies, you replace it. Simple
Nothing else about it is going to wear out.

Hehe.. I think his biggest worry is voiding the CPU warranty. Then again, CPUs rarely die.... unless you mess around with it.

To make sure you are sanding on a really flat surface ;)
