Cool, thanks. I've tried overclocking my card and the fan is on almost everytime, is that normal? Will that burn out my fan? Also, what are artifacts? I'm kind of new. And also, I was thinking of buying a laptop cooler, is the Vantec LapCool 2 305 good enough? I was thinking I needed a cooler laptop if I'm going to overclock it. Thanks again and happy holidays!

    Hello lavi48,

Yes, it's normal for the fan to be running almost all the time. After all, you are overclocking the Go5200 which increases its thermal output.

Burn out the fan? Well, like all mechanical parts, wear and tear will eventually kill any fan.

Artifacts are abnormal visual elements. Like white/black dots or a checkerbox effect, etc. Anything that doesn't look normal. ;)

The Vantec LapCool 2 is exactly the same as the Jetart Xcool NP5000. Vantec OEMed it from Jetart. You can check out our review of it.

However, a laptop cooler like that is unlikely to help cool your Go5200. After all, it's embedded deep within the notebook.

    overclock mobile 9700??

Has anybody overclocked or is it even possible?
    Just curious...
    I got a p4 3.4Ghz
    1 gig ram
    ATI mobile 9700
    4x DVD RW
    60 gig HD 7200Rpm

Yup.. it's definately possible to overclock it. BTW, which notebook are you using?

This is the wrong thread for it BTW.

This thread is for the NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200. ;)

We will be coming out with an overclocking guide for the Mobility Radeon 9700 soon though! :thumb:

I'm using GeForce FX5200 and I'm not a hardcore gamer. So all the games I'm playing using this card seem to be ok :)

Yeah, it should be okay for games that don't require a great deal of processing power. But try Doom 3 and it will definitely choke.

    ha, ha

My brother and I lowered settings to below what's normally allowed in the game. We managed to get it to a consistant playable framerate. The game looked ugly but it was playable in a sense. :p

LOL! NVIDIA would be ecstatic to hear that! :haha:

    Update time. : )

When looking around the forums here the other day I remembered there was a link posted here somewhere to a site that had a list of drivers for the Geforce Go GPU's. After I finally found the link I went to the site and noticed Forceware 66.10 for the Go5200 was available to download. (Here's the link for any who need.)

As with v57.64 driver, I had to do a bit of extra work since the driver wouldn't "take" when using the auto-installer. After getting windows to manually install them it worked. In the installer it said it's for Dell notebooks but appears to be compatable with my M30.

Now for the good stuff. I ran timedemo test in Doom 3 using the lowest settings without tweaking. With the v57.64 drivers I got a score of 12.6 fps. The same test with the 66.10 drivers gave me a score of 23.9 fps. Not too bad for the GeForce FX Go5200. :thumb: I have been playing around with Riva Tuner and pushing it up further. It may only give a few extra FPS but every little bit helps. Atleast now Doom 3 is quite playable.

    Hey, that's cool! :thumb:

Now my brother will be a very happy man as he's now using my M30 and wants to try Doom 3 on it!

How to optimise NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 GPU?

    Adrian and Forum

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 8600c, and it comes with the Go5200. My PC specs are as follows:

    - Pentium M 1.6 GHz
    - 1 Gb RAM
    - 60 Gb Hard Drive
    - 64 Mb NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 GPU

It's used as a multi-purpose PC, but also for some gaming. Out of the box, it runs Warcraft 3 and Age of Mythology just fine, but these aren't very intense on the graphics card. However, Halo PC runs quite poorly, even on the low settings (e.g. 640 x 480 and details set to low/medium) - this is very disappointing as I figure my PC specs are above the game recommendations.

I'd appreciate any advice on getting better performance from my graphics card. In fact, I have downloaded, but not yet, installed the following:

    - RivaTuner
    - Omega NVidia Drivers
    - DC Pro driver cleaner

    Thanks in advance
    KW

    Hello KW,

Have you read the Maxxing The Go5200 article yet? If not, please check it out here - http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=76

Many ATI users go for Omega drivers for better visual quality and possibly some performance improvements. But for NVIDIA, I don't think you need to go for the Omega drivers.

Thanks for the advice. I have read the overclocking article. What is the best way to test the stability of the overclocking? I am not a PC guru, but know enough to get by... I only worry about the heat generated... I will worry when the flames come out!

I am also confused by the various mobile graphics card drivers out there. Can you please clarify:

    - NVidia Go5200 is a mobile graphics card that is only supported by whoever the laptop maker is (in this case, Dell) - i.e. Nvidia does not have drivers for this?

    - there are drivers tweaked for mobile graphics cards which I can use (but at my own risk) - e.g. laptopvideo2go.com

    - are Omega drivers for mobile graphics cards?

    Thanks again
    KW

    Hello Kevin,

You can test stability using Prime 95. Nah, it's unlikely for the Pentium M to "burn out" with just a little overclocking. It doesn't produce that much heat anyway.

LOL! I think we discussed this quite a few times in this thread already. Hehe.. NVIDIA does NOT provide generic drivers for mobile GPUs. If you want updated drivers, you have to get them from your notebook manufacturer (or other notebook manufacturers).

You can also use Omega drivers, which have been hacked to enable them to be used with mobile GPUs. Like those from laptopvideo2go.com. Basically, the INFs were hacked so that the installer would allow the driver to be installed with a mobile GPU.

LOL! Yes, you must get a lot of repeat questions - exemplary patience and humour to continue answering them! As they say, if you can't work it out, ask someone who actually knows something about it...

I actually didn't mean "overclocking" the CPU, I have read your article on maxing out the Go5200 - I was referring to that... my bad. Anyway, how do you test the stability of Go5200 as you push the core and memory clock speeds upward?

    Again, thanks for the help

Argghhh... My mistake! LOL! I got this one mixed up with the Centrino overclocking guide. :haha:

Yes, we do get a lot of repeat questions. That's why we hope everyone will read the previous posts before asking the same questions. ;)

To test the stability of the GPU, you can run 3DMark03 or well, just run games like Doom 3. Doom 3 is rather sensitive to overclocking, etc.

Hope that helps you some. :)

I guess that's not always the case though. Doom 3 appeared ot run fine but when I switched to Aquamark3 I noticed glitches.

I'm glad the weekend is just around the corner. This week I haven't had time to do any overclocking and test for stability. It'll be interesting to see how good I can get Doom 3 to run while keeping my system stable.

  19. Wow, a knowledgable go5200 person? Finally!

I am at my wits end. My 64mb go5200 works fine- except when playing ANY first person game such as the LOTR game and oldere ones such as Halflife, Blue Shift, and Opposing Force. I have tried different resolutions and quality settings both in game and on the card settings. It's as if the game is running in slow motion- not lagging- but as if the game is being played in Matrix Bullet Time. Occasionally it will speed up to normal speeds but this is rare and random. I have installed new drivers, I have reverted to old ones. I have updated BIOS and various other possible slowdowns. The Matrix effect is the same regardless of quality settings either high or low! What can I do?!

Did you check what clock speeds your Go5200 is running at?
