ok ..my current budget is about RM300 for a new hard disk ..
so i'm here asking your opinions ..

    currently i'm using a desktop PC ...
i'll migrate to a laptop in couple of months time ....

so i'll want to use this hard disk as my additional storage

I'm thinking of getting a SATA II hard disk .. maybe seagate, maxtor or wd ... ~160gb

want to ask if SATA II hard disk will run on normal SATA controller?
& is it possible to find a USB -> SATA enclosure ?

Yup, you can run a SATA 3Gbps hard drive on a normal SATA controller. It's backward compatible.

I think you mean a SATA-to-USB enclosure? Yeah, you can buy one. :D

It's quite easy, but see whether you are willing to pay or not.

Now correct me if I am wrong but, I was told to be careful in choosing an external case for a hard drive. Primarly because of internal heat build up. I was told of many a hard drive failure because of lack of ventilation. So in conclusion how big a fan is big enough to do this? I have a hard drive that I was thinking about doin the same thing. That is why I ask.

I've gone almost 1 week+ with my external USB HDD plugging onto the USB port. *touch wood* In the end, I unplug it coz not using it. It's officially my pink external USB drive until I can find time to burn everything out.

Normally external USB drive enclosure for notebook hdd has no fan right?

well in my point of view... external hd just for backup ...so i wont let it on day and night. When i need to backup, i turn it on after that just let it off. Most of the external HD has no fans on it unless u are using mobile rack or big size external encloser. Im using 2.5" external drive self power ..using 5400 rpm laptop HD which is goood for me to take it everywhere i wan :p :thumb:
